Nelo has a cool trick creating backgrounds like this

Is it different to the one in GMIC where you can turn a picture into plaid?

I didn't know G'MIC had one, but if I don't have to leave GIMP to do something I'm happy!!

It's under patterns
Just open picture of the colors you would like as a plaid and it will do it according to the amount of colours in it.

EDIT: Actually this is just default setting you can change them to your liking

Hallo, the Scrip found by me found no clipboard that give error "»gimp-context-set-pattern«". I not sure witch step let I let out.
I native not English and my English not always the best.

Please try version 2 of script. It should solve the "Clipboard" hardcoded problem.

thank you, that script do it. For me was difficult because not know what I had make false. The Gmic Version worked and after some tries, I could even do it by hand. I do this possible once before but forgot it. Now is easyer for me.
