Here is a new version of the Joined-upText plugin - version 1.05 - intended to work on Gimp version 2.8. If the old script worked on earlier versions of Gimp this should also work too.
The zipped folder includes new font versions with kerning data - even though this is not particularly useful in joined-up mode. There is a new bold weight for the italic font. I have taken the opportunity to add smart quotes to the plug-in.
This script requires the installation of JoinerVariations-v5, ItalicVariations-v5 and ItalicBoldVariations-v5 True Type fonts. It is not compatible with earlier versions of JoinerVariations so it is best to remove older versions of the script as well the older fonts to avoid problems. JoinerVariations-v5 will appear as JoinerVariations, ItalicVariations etc in your font lists.
Download the zipped folder with the necessary files here:

The filter can be accessed via Filters > Text FX > Joined-up Fonts... dialog. Here is the usual link to a topic about viewing large dialog boxes in py scripts.
