Recently re-discovered.
I like it, hence my decision to translate it into python (as I did with other scripts I liked).
While translating I made some changes/additions.
From the info at the beginning of the filter:
# =========================================================
# Changes applied on python version (DN):
# - possibility to define the size of the generated pattern
# - chosen pattern is rescaled to chosen size
# - default look to "Greyscale Compensated"
# - default no-pure Black (16,16,16) and no-pure White (239,239,239)
# - original source is recreated below the dithered version
# for further user's processing
# ==========================================================

If someone is interested, here my version:

Edit:
in case someone didn't experiment already with the excellent RobA original script, here it is for your convenience:

You may use any pattern (as in RobA original script) but beware that:
- the filter's aim is to render a "dithered" image, hence the chosen pattern should not be made of pure black and white pixels (use gradients as source for creating new ones)

Because one of the changes is to re-create the original below the dithered layer, you may just set the dithered layer to softlight and get something like this:

Jayd - In thought dithered, using pattern Fabr-815-1.jpg with a size of 9_softlight-original.jpg

About the pattern size:
- the default of 9 (as in the original script) is good for medium-small images (e.g. the last one I posted), for large images it's better to increase it (as you've seen in the first 3 posts)

In this case I used BURN on the dithered layer over the source:

Here I used an even smaller size of the generated pattern (5 instead of 9) and applied MULTIPLY over the original:

Thanks Issabella, I see you like it as I do.
Rob has always created very nice and interesting filters.

Thank you so much Dinasset. Are there more grayscale dither design? Where are them?

I don't have other dither patterns, I just tried with some pattern I have, and I created one from a gradient (using spiral mode). If you want to try with your patterns, choose among those having "gradient" values (i.e. many tones from light to dark), you may find some giving interesting results; I tried to find the one used by Oregonian years ago with the original script but I didn't succeed.

Among my tries this one could be interesting (from a fractal I guess you have too)

Here are some more Dither patterns. I cant remember where i got them from.

Maybe it was this website, that you can only access through the wayback machine now:
https://web.archive.org/web/20160305063 ... tent=81817

It has the steps on how to dither an image manually.

Thanks for sharing Rob's script-fu, Diego; don't recall ever seeing it. Anyway, ran using a seamless Turring pattern first, blended that result with original and ran the preset again with default setting. Did a few cleaning steps afterwards. :)

I love this effect. Thank you so much Dinasset. Konstantin, I appreciate your patterns a lot. :) :tyspin
Lyle, thanks for your outcome.
now I'm practising with different patterns and settings. I like them loads.
