Pat, I see you started playing with this nice RobA's filter (let me call it that way, my version is a simple translation/adaptation to my personal taste), experimenting your way; good!
Did you start considering creating your patterns? If so, once you'll find an interesting one, post it and share it.

One way to create a new dither pattern is to use the std gradient FG-to-BG BlackToWhite on a new file (like 99*99) and choosing a mode (like square, for instance).

Using that one I obtained these outcomes (gray / coloured)

I used Konstantin's patterns on these results.

Because -during my trials- I've seen that the most critical part in the use of the filter is choosing the most appropriate pattern size, I've prepared a slightly amended version which allows the user to enter the value "0", in which case the filter calculates the size according to the image width.
Still you may enter the value you like, if not "0" the filter doesn't apply any calculation.

For me it's certainly useful, you know I'm lazy.
For non-lazy people the idea is:
- try with the option "0"
- the outcome indicates which size was determined by the filter
- play with sizes around that to see whether you may get a more pleasant output
