hello,

actually trying to reach "skinnyhouse" just not sure how to direct a post?

been using Gimp 2.8.22 on XP sp3 machine for some time. decided to try and learn "custom font". been trying all the tutorials i can get my hands on with little success. most of the time iam getting the same error (included in an attachment).

right now i am focused on trying to complete the tutorial "Custom-Font-XCF-Files" (skinnyhouse).

as far as i know i am setting everything up right. i guess i would understand a little better if i could see the "layer window" more often since i think that is where some/most of my problems could be.

i have included screen shots of my windows and my plugins.

any help i could with this to get started on my way to learning it would be appreciated.

thanks for the help

dhugg

Hi dhugg
Admire your determination to stick with XP. Have pm_ed you.

Have been unable to locate that particular version of the filter that was causing you problems. I suspect that it was intended for use with Gimp 2.10 but cannot be sure. You could try one of the even earlier versions to see if that works. Link below:

hey skinnyhouse,

thanks for the effort!

i received your private message but couldnt find a spot to include an attachment so i came back here...

its not like i prefer working in the "stone age" but i have been using gimp on xp for 3 years now and this is the first time i have had a possible issue. I am just using my xp machine to learn the basics of gimp. i have a windows 10 machine but i use it for everything else and i wanted to stay seperate as long as i could while learning before moving over. maybe its time to get up to date....

i have included the expanded screen shot just in case its something obvious that will let me continue on.

thanks again for the help and advice..

dhugg

Try opening the Procedure Browser in your version of Gimp. I think you access it from the Python-Fu menu - but I cannot really remember. In the search box type in the word 'clear' and see if that particular gimp procedure ie 'gimp-drawable-edit-clear' is found. If it comes up I will be scratching my head - if it does not show up, you will need to upgrade to Gimp 2.10. I am using SamJ's 2.10.18 portable version from a pen drive as well as 2.10.12 from my desktop.

thanks again skinnyhouse,

looks like no matter how i answer this i may be waiting until i get to 2.10 to get to custom font.

based on the results of the procedure browser it looks like possibly the name of the procedure could have changed to now include the word "drawable" since the description sounds close to what i am looking for?

i have included a screen shot...

thanks again for any help... dhugg

Yup. In any case the custom font filters are now written solely for Gimp 2.10. They will not work on 2.8 - and the version you are trying to use must be for Gimp 2.10 - since the procedure is not in the 2.8 database.

Ah well look forward to seeing you on the other side.

There is a good collection of custom fonts over on GimpLearn if you haven't been there yet.

hey skinnyhouse,

you know i am not one to give up easy (must be the 30 years of mainframe coding experience)..

i figured out how to edit the script/python and i changed the code that you sent me by changing the procedure that was not found to the similar one that was available to us. happy to report everything is working fine now with that particular tutorial.

must be different names used in older versions?

the folks on the other website said that it would work on 2.8 and they directed me to you for help.

thanks for the help looking forward to moving on. have a good one.

Excellent news. Can't remember now which procedures were deprecated moving into 2.10, but likely that the one that caused the error message replaced the one you were able to use. Enjoy and stay safe.
