I came across the text embroider script ... somewhere on this site. The results are beautiful. But why can't I succeed? :gaah

Unfortunately the script is for Gimp 2.8 and uses scripts and plugins that are missing / no longer work with Gimp 2.10

Needed from Gimp 2.8
a script erase-rows.scm
plugins ripple.exe and if using Gimp 2.10.14 bump-map.exe

Give a hint as to which OS (linux / win / 32 or 64 bit) and Gimp version you are using and I am sure someone will post the required files.

You will have all the necessary in your computer somewhere ;)

Best advice is use the text-embroider_RD_V-2.0.scm with your Gimp 2.8 - It is made for that. Nothing else to do.

Otherwise, for Gimp 2.10.14 some (Win 64 bit) files zipped and attached.

Unzip. Put bump-map.exe and ripple.exe in C:\Users\"yourname"\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\2.10\plug-ins
and
erase-rows.scm add-bevel.scm text-embroider_RD_V-2.0.scm in C:\Users\"yourname"\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\2.10\scripts

In use: Make sure the text layer is the active layer when applying the script.

note: I did try in a linux 2.10.18 and that had problems with erase-rows. Had to apply that manually after running the text-embroider script.

I've been trying replicate embroidery on GMIC using various filters and minus some embossing or beveling, this was as close as I could get without utilizing a script. Let me know what you think and maybe offer GMIC filter suggestions. I'd like to just create the entire embroidery filter (with revisions and improvements) and submit it to GMIC, permanently.

This is using Rod's script (the every other line option seemed to be missing, so back to GMIC to add scanlines)

Denim isn't hard to duplicate in GIMP, use a medium blue, add noise, blur, and add diagonal scanlines. Fake seams using bumpmaps and displace (Fencepost tutorial).

The embroidery is trickier, and because GIMP's internal tools change and some are removed, some scripts become obsolete. However, using GMIC and Lyle's Ripple filter, it's possible to get really close. I think some fonts work better than others, like suggested by Ed Merced in his tutorial (Mardian Demo font).

Start here by downloading Fencepost's tutorial, it's an old version of GIMP but still works in the current GIMP.

That will get you started, while I work on gathering my notes on the embroidery.

Let me know what you think of this example. I'm working at getting as close to perfect as humanly (GIMP) possible before I throw out a tutorial, so in case anyone wants to script it out it will be worth the effort.

Here's the link to the video. I was flying by the seat of my pants with scribbled notes. Post any questions about the video that doesn't seem clear.

Thank you for the clearly explained tutorial mahvin. I like your results.

I'm using gimp 2.10.10 and find layer effects throws up errors so I may not have the right version.

Bevel and emboss gives
gimp: GEGL-CRITICAL: gegl_node_add_child: assertion 'child->priv->parent == NULL' failed

Inner glow gives:
layerfx.py:2048: Warning: value "0" of type 'gint' is invalid or out of range for property 'area-height' of type 'gint' self.color_button = gimpui.ColorButton("Glow Color", 80, 0, gimpcolor.RGB(255, 255, 190, 255))

They both do something but their results don't really show.

Here's my result anyway:

Nice job! A little inner glow and a small drop shadow should work it out better.

Maybe update to 2.10.18?
