After a long "incubation period", I'm ready to release my package for FREE PAINTING.
It is composed by:
- 2 filters: the main operative filter which performs the transformation of a photo into a fake painting and a front-end filter to select a preset on the base of the image type
- 10 presets (text files)
- 30 brush-textures sets
- 1 canvas texture
- 1 tutorial
I want to thank warmly:
- Issabella (who is a precious friend), for the long and continuos support during all the phases of the project
- Mahvin (who is a painter), for his selection of the best brush-textures to approach a painting look
- Ella (who is a digital artist), for her selection among the same sets

Sounds interesting, may be a good idea to put up at least one picture to showcase a possible result though, just to entice the audience. ;)

True, but there is a specific thread in Gimp Art.

Hi Diego.

I admire the enormity of work in creating a great new plugin. :clap

However, I have small questions:
1. Why did you use PF_STRING instead of the more flexible PF_DIRNAME to specify the location of MyFPSpresets?
2. How did you create your textures - isn't it possible to create them while the plugin is running (instead of downloading and installing them)? However, I know that with so many textures it is difficult to remember the settings used.

1.I've just tried that and it works, so I didn't search for optimum solution
2.I created all patterns using FilterForge, then manipulated them according to my needs.

If -by chance- you start FreePaintingPreset having on your desktop an empty folder MyFPSpresets, you may get a "stopping" error.
Better to replace the front end program with this amended version.
It will in any case continue (using defaults).

If someone wants to get a bit more delicate portrait outcome, please edit the "portrait.txt" file and set "doDistress=0" instead of "doDistress=1", using for instance notepad++:

doDistress=0

or replace the file with this one (but unzip it, rename it with the standard name "portrait.txt", and override the existing one):

All under user/Preferences/patterns (if you have Ofnuts' ACM: under patterns_storage then activate), but remember:
- you have to place there each single folder which you find inside the groups once unzipped, not the groups themselves.

Have a look at my user/Preferences/patterns folder

Well, I decided to add a second preset for portrait, called portraitB.
Here the updated front-end filter and the updated presets folder.

Up to the user choose between the two.
BTW also the preset for people can be used, but it's less delicate the portrait.

I think so, but you have to try yourself, it's already years that I'm using the portable Samj's package

Initially I wanted to "save" all the palettes generated by my Free Painting filter, to play a bit afterwards.
But now, after so many runs, I got too many "generated palettes" in my palettes folder, and so it happens also to the users of this filter.
Well, it's not difficult to remove palettes from the user folder in Gimp, anyhow because I'm lazy I decided to apply a little modification to the filter in order to keep only the last one.
I guess that also other users could appreciate this, hence I post here the updated filter.
