I remember CrazyCrochet, was there a plugin for this? If it still works in 2.10, where can I find it? Thank you!

Would you be so kind to comment on it (once tested) and maybe show some of your best results?

I did try... and found at least 2 bugs (or I don't know how to use it)
When a layer already is in a stack (top, bottom or middle) even with the default setting, it does not work at all.

Alone as new image, when I put "texture areas" below 6, it does not work (out of range),
Also it would be nice to be able to go down to 1 to get a "large free" area.

Other than that, when it works, it's a very cool script and I can see many uses even outside of the "crochet look", nice script thanks a lot Diego ;)

Ubuntu-MATE 20.04 (Linux)
GIMP 2.10.28 PPA from Panda Jim
Also same error with GIMP 2.10.25 appimage from aferrero
Yes, I have python2 installed as well :bigthup

@PixLab
Looking at your found errors:
1.if the source image is multi-layer the filter does not work
Did you have a selection all active?
I ask because I tried to reproduce the error preparing a test image with:
- a BG with a texture
- a second layer with the image I like to "chochet"
- a 3rd layer with a different texture
I set active the second layer.
The filter works (*) if there is no "selection all" active. Abends if there is.
Could you please test?

edit: works in the sense that it does not abend, but the filter does not preserve properly the existing layers

2.About the number of areas
The filter has been created to render a crochet representing an image, and it makes use of different crochet sizes to offer a better rendering.
Yes, 6 is the minimum. I didn't identify that limit clearly to the user.
I will replace the filter setting 6 as minimum value.

Updated filter, two small changes:
1- the minimum number of areas has been set to 6
2- if there is a selection all active the filter should not abend any more

Second plugin (the "fixed" one) still the same = I got an error when I have layers (nope, nothing is selected and never was ;) ), but saved selections in channels yes ( they are un-activated ;) ) just started the plugin directly click OK (default values (image with some transparency areas or WITHOUT..)
but it works on a single image (no added channels -> brand new image) like the first plugin.

It seems to be the "auto-generated" background
because it worked when I chose transparent Bg, but if it's auto-generated -> it crashes

Also I discovered if there is even 1 layer group only in the layer stack, it does not work, it just crashes systematically whatever setting we input ;)

Hope this help

Thanks Patrice.
Yes, I agree with you with multilayer images we have to choose transparent BG.

Maybe I can just add a note on the panel with the parameters, if you think it can help users.
