i know this happens when you duplicate strokes or shadows .. they get darker even if 'normal' mode
i dont understand why either -- but it is good to know that it happens to recheck the final result
-- That is a glitch with GIMP and not with your scripting :)
Keep on coding! ..i am trying to learn python (in general) then maybe i can try these someday

- run with option "fine"
- then applied C2G to the outcome

Using "regular" maybe the effect is better applied a mini-gaussianblur (0.5)

after filter run:
- activate top layer (the outcome with the full layer name)
- go to Colours/Desaturate/Color to Gray and execute it using default values

I tried the same with desaturation at 60% and one with colors>desaturation>sepia at 60%
- i wanted to see what the result would look like with a little bit of color retained
