Might be nice if a pattern can be added.

You should really be using Filters>Map>Map object to sphere for this. In four easy steps:

1) Create a rectangle image with aspect ratio = Pi (3.14...)
2) Add your colors and text

3) Image > Scale image and shrink it horizontally so that it becomes a square

4) Apply the filter
