Thanks for the tutorial and all comments.
At the first attempt, it looks like this (without the Gegl Recursive Transform - because with variable dimensions of the image and the planet it requires difficult matrix operations :puzzled ):

I used a Mars map to make the planet. I duplicated the Rings layer a couple of times and resized them to look like a bigger set of rings.

Several new features in this release, including Fractal Explorer (and an important note here:
The interactively triggered filter sometimes hides - but flashes in the systray).

This is the last test version (probably only fixes reported bugs).
No more publishing uninteresting ideas (and therefore also a very small group of interested parties).
Many thanks to Pocholo for nice cooperation. :hi5

Edit: New version with bug fixes in the next post.

As announced, the new version 04, mainly with corrections.
I tried to compare Jupiter Saturn - a photo taken by the Cassini spacecraft and created at P&M Cosmos.

I hope not everyone will know immediately which is which. :hehe

Edit:The attachment has been removed as there is already a newer version available.

Your Jupiter looks a lot like Saturn, complete with the signature polar hexagon. But then the Cassini-Huygens mission was sent to Saturn.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious error in the name of the planet (I stupidly duplicated someone else's mistake in the caption for the photo :hoh ).

Ok, that's nitpicking, but since the terminator on your planet goes almost through the pole, the sun is pretty close to the rings plane and the the planet's shadow should be somewhat longer and extend over all the rings.

It's also the first time I notice that the rings do produce a shadow on the planet...

Hallo, I have problem that this plugin would not show me in Gimp 2.10.30. I do not know I had made wrong. Is there a point I have not activated?

The procedure is typical: You unpack it and place it in the plug-ins folder:
Windows: c:\Users\* Your name *\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\2.10\plug-ins\P&M Cosmos.py
lINUX: /home/* Your name */.config/GIMP/2.10/plug-ins/P&M Cosmos.py.

I'm glad you were able to find it, Andrew. Yes you have to open a new image with and add an alpha channel.

:( Seems my computer is the only one that doesn't like how much resources your plugin uses. Everytime I have tried it my whole computer freezes. Gimp, I cannot cancel out or close it. Then I cannot even close my computer down properly to cancel out so just have to turn it off. Since no one else has reported this, must be a problem on my end. Pity, I would like to try. I tried with your first release and also with your last and no go. Not made anything yet.

It is sad. :(
Probably my computer has weaker parameters than Yours (RAM-4.00 GB, processor-3.10 GHz) and the plugin works fine.
Can You run any Python plugin with preview? (a lot on gimpscripts.net).
Your description for Win only matches the system's reaction when You try to resize the window with the "Preview" option turned on.
The plugin does nothing (except displaying a window) until You select an option.
We've talked about this before - are Gimp's system resources (in Preferences) well configured?

1st time I tried it after clicking on ok it froze me up. This time I just made the dialogue wider to see the whole thing (still didn't make it wide enough) - looks like you need a scroll bar on the bottom. I didn't try to make the preview window larger but it was larger than any preview windows I have for anything except for the GMIC plugin.
Gimp is allowed - or can use a lot of my resources. - I was working on a nearly 2 GB image the other day and it didn't do anything cept what it was supposed to do.

my computer ---
Device name Sallyanne
Processor AMD A6-7310 APU with AMD Radeon R4 Graphics 2.00 GHz
Installed RAM 8.00 GB (6.91 GB usable)
Device ID B5582E19-4951-41E8-AE54-1AAF24AC573E
Product ID 00325-96237-93134-AAOEM
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch No pen or touch input is available for this display

@Susan.

Your answer partially explains the problem with the plugin.
Preview and dialogue are one (common) part - You can only stretch the window when "Preview" is turned off.
You can include a screenshot of the plugin window right after launch - against the background of the Gimp window (as I can resize the Preview and dialogue) and Gimp's System Resources (in Preferences) as this can cause identical problems with G'mic (about which I read on: discuss.pixls.us).

Thank you, I finally made something. :) I'll have to remember that trick about turning the preview off before enlarging or stretching the dialogue. Have to keep working on something to share.

would be great if one could start those plug-ins with the preview turned off.
Is there a way?
