Hi Teapot

Thank You very much for trying it out and very valuable comments.
Unfortunately, no Python plugin has an option to reset settings (only the radical option remains: Filters -> Reset all filters).
The second problem with duplicate layer names (when reused in one session) will be solved by (apart from disabling the visibility of existing layers) renaming them by adding a space in front of the layer name (then there is no need to start with a new image).
Is this solution (ver.0.6 +) acceptable for You?
I know You have the right imagination and knowledge about Gimp - don't you want to suggest (and give hints how) more options (especially UFOs)?

Hi MareroQ,

Thank you it's good to know about the lack of python plugin reset, and to be reminded of reset all filters is useful.

Multiple planets in the same .xcf file are working great here now :tyspin

I had a try at a weird translucent alien ship. It only works in the bottom right corner due to having straight edges so not sure if it's of any use or not. I can write the steps used if you are interested but fully understand if it's one to miss :hehe

Yes please write it as it reminds me the alien ship in The Abyss movie https://d2ycltig8jwwee.cloudfront.net/f ... 9a765b.png https://live.staticflickr.com/7858/4012 ... 88b8_k.jpg

I think I recognize this filter :hehe , is it the one from G'MIC >> Rendering >> Popcorn Fractal?

Hi Teapot.
Thanks a lot for Your quick reply.
Your very pretty UFO is what I will take a closer look at (fractal Reptorian with infinite possibilities).
I am interested in Your way of execution (mini-tut/approach).
We still invite everyone to play (no idea is stupid - bad coding at best, so there is no guarantee that we will be able to translate the idea into code).
In Update Ver. 0.7, the last two straight UFOs: Flying Saucer 2 and Arrowhead.

Edit:The attachment has been removed as there is already a newer version available.

All good fun, Does not have to be realistic, just in the tradition of old science fiction mags. (Want some inspiration, go to https://archive.org/details/ifmagazine) A 'quickie' using ver 0.7

Spot on Pixlab, it's Popcorn fractal :hehe

Here's my steps:

Make a new 1000x1000 layer.

Gmic -> Rendering -> Popcorn fractal
All default settings except:
Density 1.5
Zoom 0.803
Trigonometric Mode Trig-6
Which makes it:
fx_rep_pfrac 50,1.5,0.05,3,0.803,0,50,50,1,1,0,1,2,0,1,2,0,1,2,0,1,0,0

Soften the top and left edges a little, many ways to do this, e.g.
Rectangular select the layer with top left corner in about 50 pixels.
Add a layer mask initialised to the selection.
Select none.
Gaussian blur the layer mask about 10.
Result so far:

Attachment:
popcorn.png
popcorn.png [ 1.51 MiB | Viewed 598 times ]

Put the Popcorn fractal layer in a new layer group.
Set the layer mode of the group to screen.
Add a new layer and place in the layer group above the Popcorn fractal layer.
Fill with a linear gradient on the diagonal, I used Caribbean blues.
Set the layer mode to HSL colour.

Use 3D Transform tool to tilt the layer group.
Scale the group smaller.
Move the group slightly off the bottom and right of the canvass to hide the bottom and right edges.

If a clear look is wanted, turn the visibility of the gradient layer off.

@Rich2005.
Thanks for paying attention to the different versions of G'mic. I only found 1 bug in Alien 1 - it was fixed in ver.0.8 - if there are others, can You identify which one?
When it will be released (stable) Ver. 3.1.0 we will improve the code.

@Teapot.
Thanks for the tutorial :hi5 . I'll be experimenting with mask and blur.

Some remarks after very preliminary trials (remove the black color and use Gegl's polar coordinates):
- Popcorn Fractal [Transformational] seems more suitable for adaptation to ships,
- As there are endless variations, I decided that the user would be able to use their own preset.

If anyone finds an interesting parameter setting in G'mic, don't hesitate to post it here.

Edit:The attachment has been removed as there is already a newer version available.

Very nice. :clap
Are You suggesting a new tab - Explosion? (this could be the hardest to code ...) :roll:

It's tricky, I did a lot of playing around with supernova and zoom motion blur that's not repeatable. Hopefully someone else knows a better way.

That is a good effect.

Several 'shatter' effect methods that are really hands-on, like this one https://www.gimpusers.com/tutorials/cre ... ion-effect Not really easy.

Not much of a better way ;) A possible starting point is the gmic crease filter. Only outputs a layer but as a 'made-up' animation.

I wonder if it were not possible to make your plug-in translation ready.
You already have this in the script
import gettext
t = gettext.translation("gimp20-python", gimp.locale_directory, fallback=True)
_ = t.ugettext

so what would be necessary to make it translatable with a language file would be to change strings like
"Don't Use ","Type Earth "

to
_("Don't Use "),_("Type Earth ")

Furthermore, I would not put that into "gimp20-python" but some other name ("gimp-cosmos-python" maybe), so it's not overwritten with GIMP updates.
Just a thought ...

Thanks Rich. I gave it another try based on that tutorial. I agree it's not easy.

MareroQ :clap Yours is the much harder task in making it generic as mine was bespoke to that image. I wonder if it's worth splitting the item up more before the zoom motion blur so it's not so dense? I used rep_array_random_jumble_by_px in the one above for the far flung pieces.

@Nelo.
I can do that for Ver.1.0

@Teapot.
Here is a small dilemma:
- do you want to recognize what has exploded?
or
- just the overall result of the explosion (tailored to each object)?

Thanks to your suggestions, I added more control options to the FX tab - let the user decide (to some extent :hehe - the rest must be tweaked manually).

Edit:The attachment has been removed as there is already a newer version available.

Wow MareroQ :yes that was quick :clap

Here's a go with the ships neonised before exploding one and for the second image I had a play with gmic on the result to try and make an old science fiction mags look inspired by rich2005's link in post #73

I added the last scheduled option to FX: Meteorize.
I think I will wait with the release of this version (probably the last one) to the stable G'MIC 3.1. so we are still waiting for your ideas and suggestions. :grinyes

@Nelo,

I checked if the translation from the * .mo file would work (so far only one tab per test).
It works - but I have doubts about its purposefulness :roll: - because the translation requires a bit of effort: a lot of lines, knowledge of Poedit, different division (into lines) of the translation (because the number of letters is different), probably a different file for Windows and Linux (I haven't checked).
Who will feel like it and the time (not to mention a little knowledge of "Poedit")?

Yes, you might be right.
It was just an idea. Would be easy at least for future plug-ins just to write string in a translatable way.
I'll go on translating interesting plug-ins in that way -- helps my husband, who doesn't know any English.
