This is only a problem on Ubuntu I think, they moved to python3 and dropped python2.
I made 2 appimages that add python2. They launch the system or ppa-installed Gimp.

The appimages are here.

If you don't want to install a bunch of debs to get python2 this is easier and its outside of the filesystem.
