This filter perfectly emulate the effect of Steampunk Pencil. :yes
Here nobody can't proof me wrong since i just invented the concept of Steampunk Pencil
Anyway this is the B&W Steampunk Pencil...a Colour Steampunk Pencil will follow soon

Image
Gmic " Steampunk Pencil" by PhotoComiX, on Flickr

Maybe i should have called Steampunk Sponge because the effect is more close to a sponge then to a pencil, anyway since this filter is based on "pencil" i left the name

Controls

1 Size
2 Amplitude
Control Size and Amplitude of the pencil(exactly as for the built-in "pencil" filter , that is in the "Artistic" Menu of gimp)
3"Steam Pression"
control the spreading, the chose is between 4 different preset of the Kuwahara filter)
4 "Lubrification"
For lubrification is used a very slight amount of gaussian blur (from 0 to 1.8, default is less than 1, i suggest higher amount only on very large image

5 ) Quick contrast FX
Optionally you may call from here some preset to modify the contrast
the FIRST option...is skip and do nothing,
option 2 correspond to apply a Contrast mask
option 3 is the contrary of 2 the mask is used to Boost
option 4 apply a Fast Tone Map preset
option 5 use a personal preset of Local Normalization
option 6 use the default of Local Normalization

6 Add A Painter Touch
For a more "painted and smoot effect" :
it will enable the last 3 sliders allowing to apply "Anistropic Smoothing "

####################################################

Possible Request (i mean request that i may satisfy painlessy )

1
kuwahara-STEAM PRESSION

You may have noticed that i didn't allow much control on kuwahara (steam pression),
this because i found that only few values give the effects i like (radius of 2 or 3 with 1 or 2 iterations)

BUT if for any reason you would like a broader range of values just let me know, i may do quickly
i may even replace the dropdown list with the original Kuwahara control (Size and iteration)

2 Fast Contrast FX

That basically call preset, if you have some other good preset , i may add it easily

have fun

The filter is already available by refreshing the filters (IF you have my source enabled )

Hi PC probably just pressure (as in steam pressure) and lubrication (as is used for oiling and greasing of moving parts in an engine ) are the words you are looking for.

well for a italian lubrication sound as a dirty word derived by "lubrico" (word that a old professor would use for " sexually dirty and/or pervers") :hehe

i forgot to add a before/after,

BEFORE

AFTER

TIP
i want the effect be a little flou (usually i tend more to oversharpen) but if you want less fuzzy just work at bigger scale and than scale down

:bump I made a new version but i didn't delete the previous (they will not conflict )

The basic difference is that in the previous version i was trying to guide to what i consider the most reasonable setting, but that was also somehow limiting user option
On the contrary in the new i left you free to experiment what the best for you and the images you are editing :paint

here the new filter

Image

The new control "Steam iterations" correspond to kuwahara "iteration"

A quick tip
Apparently gmic has nothing equivalent to the automatic option of gimp level, but you use it as last step if the final result looks too bleach (or you may use curve, or one of the equivalent gmic filters)

Let me know what version you prefer ,temporary i will left both while waiting for comments and suggestions

It's not showing up in mine. I have v1.4.9.3. I have refreshed several times.
