It was pretty simple, Lyle. Using the color tool, I selected white boxes, then converted the selections to a path. In Path dialog, I used smooth path (default settings), http://registry.gimp.org/node/20069 checking the "Smooth only specified corners" box.

Yup; just tried this and got something similar to what you did. Wonder if there is a way to get the paths separated more? That's still cool info Mahvin. :)

I tried scaling, no dice. If the path smoothing would occur "inside" the box, rather than outside, we'd be in business. I thought maybe by inverting the selection before converting to a path would help, and it didn't. :(

OK; Inkscape to the resque. I exported the path as SVG and ported that result into Inkscape. I broke apart the path and then used Inkscape's Remove overlap feature and set the page size to fit the new dimensions. Ported the resulting SVG back into GIMP and saved (didn't have to do this; could have just did this in Inkscape; lol). :)

PS; you ninjaed me. :)

Lyle to the rescue, once again. Brilliant! :)

BTW, looking at your resulting image, do you notice a peculiar pattern with the method of how the sizes are randomized? I've seen this process somewhere else, looks almost identical when the shapes are circles, it was hard to tell with boxes (squares).

More fun for my feeble brain then brilliant Mahvin. You were the one to figure out the smooth path step (not sure if this could be all done in Inkscape itself though). Cool that you can export paths in GIMP as svg files. :)
