Here's an anisotrophic/ACE variation (sort of iterative process; to my earlier result, ran my Fake Smudge G'MIC preset, ran ACE, ran Fake Smudge again, and then ran Rodilius). :)

OK; this time I'm including the XCF file (compressed). The trick is that I ran ACE (not shown in XCF) twice before running Rodilius.

Lyle, with your technique, it really looks like Fractalius now. Nice to have this kind of effect now for GIMP (and for command line users of G'MIC as well :) ). Rod, your initial idea was brillant !

David i can not believe how small that piece of code is. :lol
Your coding abilities are truly amazing! And now you added the animation.I will have to check that out asap. :)

O ,Lyle, and Mahvin great pieces of work!
Lyle thanks for the tutorial on the puppy image.

GMIC never fails to astound me.It seems every filter in GMIC has at a minimum 2 uses.
I really do not know how anyone can use Gimp without GMIC.This program and Shellout are 2 pieces of Gimp i never am without.

David thanks again for whipping this up so fast. What a great addition to GMIC and Gimp!
Okay i am off to try out the animation feature. :)

I'm starting to better manage the different parameters. Having more orientations looks closer to the Fractalius effect. Choosing darker color mode is also nice to create kind of cartoon stylized images, as below :

Still one of my favorite filter right now :)

Hi,
Fabulous results.
Could you describe how this effect is achieved?

Thanks.

ooooh i like that effect David. :)

I do not know what it is about this flower but i just love this picture.
This is the same flower image duplicated and the top layer i ran through Filter/Edges/Neon
about 16 and .25 for amount.
Then i flattened the image and ran it through Rodilius this time with all channels not just RGB.
I also used lighten instead of saturation this time.

Then i had the original flower layer bottom, and the top Rodilius layer
I set the Rodilius layer to screen and flattened the image again.

Now i am off to run sequences -Rodilius. :) :bigthup

Here is another try, with the classical Mandrill image :

Image

It does require some color corrections before (to enhance the contrast and maximize the 'fiber' effect), and afterwards (the colors are a bit faded, so they require to be boosted a little bit).

David that is sweet! I love the effect the filter has on eyes.

Here is the Rodilius animation. :)
Pretty darn cool i think!

Image

I of course had to trim it down a bit.It took 22 minutes to render all 10 frames then i had to do some fudging of my own. :lol

Tried to make the flower seem to be still while the rest of the bg shimmers and sparkles.

Toying with a new look that I call Organic Flow. May outline later (sort of a convoluted procedure that I really need to figure out a way to streamline). Obviously, it heavily depends on Rodilius. Click the image for it's Flickr (and higher rez as well as an external link to another one that I did much earlier). :)

You're right about it being addictive David; so much that I spent over 2 years trying to fake it until you and Rod did it for real (and imho, even better then Fractilus itself). Very cool animation Nix. :)

I call this one Alien DNA. I used my twirling Yarn brush that I actually shared here with you all in the recent past and then stroked it with the Slinky created path . I then ran Rodilius, inverted and followed my Organic Flow technique. :)

That one is groovy. Makes me wonder what the creature would look like. Yep. Groovy and spooky, even. Well, time for my meds.
