Photo effects script http://registry.gimp.org/node/97
and the homepage with examples
http://users.telenet.be/ev1/gimpphotoeffects_en.html

This draws from some recent posts, (i've lost track of them) This is an old script but comes with its own Gimpressionist presets, and has a watercolour filter. Still works in Gimp 2.6.11, have not tried yet in Gimp 2.7.3 (another machine which is tied up at the moment).
Some comparisons for watercolour - not the best of examples.
Image

It also has a Chrome filter, but to get to an effect (think it was Draconian) similar to PS, well still not there, best I can do is this

and it is a tedious procedure, won't waste any more bandwidth, screenshots here for those interested.

Went to check those scripts out and I downloaded them from the Gimp Registry. Put them in the corresponding folders and hit Script-Fu -> Refresh Scripts and I get this:

may be that error but you did another, seems you install 2 different copy of the script:
...photoeffect.scm and .photoeffect246.scm

you should remove the first,
the error reported in the message seems a copy and paste error (i don't know if you copy and paste or is a error in the file on telnet.

if the last i may try to fix later ...hoping the error easy as i suppose the 2 last parenthesis in the script MIA)
but if is something more complex you will have to wait some of our script fu guru to solve

Thats a shame, could be a vista/win7 thing.

I had a feeling that I've come across these before and they are there as individual scripts in the 'fixed' collection of scripts at
http://www.gimphelp.org/ as 'FU-artist-watercolor-effect.scm' & 'FU-effects-chrome-image.scm' although the later does not have an option to adjust the colour.

The comparison I gave was meant to indicate that the standard gimp 'oilify + unsharp mask' is IMHO close to the PS watercolor plugin. I should have stated that. To be fair the Photo Effects script has its origins long ago when images were much smaller and it's effect is very small on a larger image.

When it comes to the 'PS chrome filter', difficult to get that nice blended effect.

I got rid of all the iciii scripts, they come with FX-Foundry and hard to get rid of.

Just be careful when you download a script. Kevin wrote a pretty cool script checker just for this purpose. :)

Photoeffect include a updated version of all the icci script more some pretty good new effects
so if you use them you will not need the original icci scripts

apparently there are no errors in the 2.46 Photoeffect script (notepad++ has not a Scheme syntax thingy but has Lisp that should be sufficiently close to detecte and signal missed parenthesizes )...i am wrong or you instead then download copy and paste the script ?

i would not get rid of it, it badly miss a preview but the effects are very good

I like the "chrome filter" colour choice feature over the fixed colour FU version and while I gave up coding in quickbasic days I can still copy 'n paste. So just the chrome bit and syntax corrected.

An example in my PCLOS Gimp 2.7.3

Not quite the same as the g'mic metallic filter. Might keep this one. Anyone with gimp 2.7 interested? Is it worth posting?

Did a search and found another post about this script.

I just gave this a whirl on my virtual XP box and I got the same results with the missing paren.

The script(s) (I say that because I had both in, then just restarted Gimp with just one scripts) when Gimp is launched so, they register and they seem workable. It's only if you do a Script-FU refresh scripts do those errors pop up.

And if your only supposed to have one of those photo effects scripts which one? I'm guessing the one that has a 246 at the end of the name.

So I'd be better off with the FX-Foundry script(s) if I wish effects like this?

That's because GIMP is silent about the problems when it launches. It's only when you refresh the scripts that it reports the problems.

Definitely, as the other version will cause lots of "unbound variable" errors. It appears to be a pre GIMP 2.4 version.

That's right.
Starting GIMP in verbose mode gives the unmatched parentheses error.

A closer investigation revealed that the scripts in the first half of the file were registered and the remainder were missing.

The first missing script was filled with extended character set comments.
Removing all the extended character set comments fixed the problem.

Attached is a new version of the scripts.
I documented the change in the script file and changed the version letter of the zip file.

Just a small note:

If you add bkh1914's corrected version and find that some scripts aren't working, it probably means you forgot to add the presets to the gimpressionist Presets folder.

And for what it's worth, I prefer the older corrected script, because it places them all in the Filters/Decor folder, all nice and organized.

All I did was remove the stuff that was causing Script-Fu to choke on the file. The script coding itself was not touched and the scripts still register in Filters>Decor>Photo Effects. Only now there's more of them because they all get loaded.

The preset folder and readme file are the originals - I didn't touch them at all.

It was, and still is, the user's responsibility to place the script file and the preset folder in the proper locations.

bkh1914: Yes, thanks for doing that. The gimphelp.org versions were scattered all over the place. This version makes it compact, easier to find and use.

The Brickwall texture in 2-6-11 works fine, but in 2-7-4 it seizes the gimp and forces a restart.

Does anybody else have this problem with 2-7-4 portable, or have any advice. It also happened with the JMS brickwall script.

I tested all of them in Gimp-2.7.4 and get just one error with
Photo Effects>Artistic>Colored Pencil

Error says Gimpressionist can not be launched.
