i was somehow surprised to see that gimp cannot open the most used format to distribute comics online ,.cbr and cbz
The format is very simple, basically .cbr and .cbz are simply archives (zip ,7zip or rar) of zipped jpg
Would be cool a script or plugin, maybe can just be something similar to shellout , there are several good open source apps, and i suppose libraries to display Comix (.cbr, cbz)

i hope for a script or plugin that may at least call one of this apps (maybe comical will be the best ) to open , navigate and chose the page to open in gimp.

This python plugin: http://registry.gimp.org/node/18435 is a file hanfler for the ORA format which is also an archive of discrete things.

It uses http://docs.python.org/library/zipfile.html which should also be able to deal with cbz files.

There is also a http://pypi.python.org/pypi/rarfile/1.0 but it looks like it will only read, not write....
