I'm brand new to the whole Gimp plugins thing so please bare with me!! I am on a mac I had already updated to Gimp 2.8 when I started trying to mess around with plug ins and scripts I found and downloaded the apng plug in and followed the instructions on installing it. Pasted the ui and exe file in the Gimp/Contents/Resources/lib/gimp/2.0/plugins also did this and deleted the original png file... and also as I seen someone else suggest somewhere pasted into Users/Username/Library/Application Support/Gimp/plug-ins. I've tried doing all of the above separate and together lol I installed Gimp 2.6.11 again and did the same things with a few different plug ins I found to download. And of course restarted Gimp after each attempt. NOTHING WORKS and I'm desperate! Please please please somebody help! lol

No i have APNG working in Gimp-2.8, it isn't broken.
These are settings for windows not mac but they should be similar.
You may be trying to open or use it incorrectly.
To use apng try this
Place both the files for apng in your plugins folder. gimp-version\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins
open gimp
1) create an animation (make a few layers and place circles in them with different colors).
2) go to file (if gimp-2.8 use export), save>when the save as or export dialog opens go to the bottom left part of the dialog and you will see a drop down menu.
Image

3) select png-apng image and click save or export
Image

4) save the settings as an animation and click export.

If you need any more help PM me. :)

Wow sorry I got your panties in a bunch Z... wasn't meaning to "shout" or act desperate (even though I actually admitted to being so in the OP).. I'm actually just very anxious to get this taken care of and start working on some things. Would you care to send me a list of things I can be sure not to do when posting so as to avoid your future scoldings? And should I warrant one again... it's WOman.. :lol

Rod - I did exactly what you said.. wasn't sure whether you were wanting me to remove the original png file from plug ins or not so I tried not and when I went to the drop down menu, there was no apng next to the png extension, and if I went on to export it as a png it did not give me the animation options. So then I tried removing the original png file and reopening Gimp and starting again and this time there was no png or apng extensions available. Going on to try to save them as anyway results in a pop up saying said file extension does not exist. All I can do is hit ok and try saving it as something else. And thank you for trying to help the new girl. :tyspin

You are more than welcome. :)
Tell me, do you have this dll file in the bin folder? I am not quite sure if Mac uses dll files.
libpng15-15.dll

You could also talk to Partha about compiling one for Mac. He compiles Gimp Mac versions. :)

There is also this program.
http://gif2apng.sourceforge.net/ there are two versions
command line
stand alone

If you can run Java jar files there is this command line script

Sigh ok.. so that gif to apng isn't quite what I need I'm trying to avoid making a gif because of the difference in quality between gif's and apng's.. as for that java script I'm not ashamed to admit I'm totally clueless lol I will keep on trying to get this though. Thanks a million Rod, it is nice to know there are still decent helpful people out there! :bigthup

Sorry I couldn't help either. I have apng and have no problem with it but I am not familiar with the MAC setup so I thought there was enough MAC users here to come to your rescue.
Hope you get it sorted.

Please no sorries! I'm quite determined and will get it figured out. When I do I will post my solution so anyone else who might have the same issue can stumble upon the thread and be spared the headache and frustration I am currently experiencing.. :lol :gaah

Macs don't do DLLs. :)

If the OP will let me know what the problem is, I can try to help. BTW, last time, I did apng, it was more pain than worth. :(. You may be better off using mng which should be built in your Gimp version.

Ooooh the infamous Partha :)

So.. I'm not really sure what the problem is. I have Mac OS X 10.7.4 and installed Gimp 2.8. I'm just starting to kinda figure out the whole plug ins and scripts thing. I'm really not all that technical. I was actually researching on how to make an animated png. A kinda of RPG that I play only allows png and gif files to be uploaded into it. Having gotten the hang of Gimp and the basics and all that I tend to use the gif for the animated pictures. But obviously the quality isn't as good as the animated png's. Thus, my search on how to make an animated png. So now I'm learning about plug ins and scripts which brings me to the apng plug in for Gimp. I downloaded and installed the plug in just as I was explained to and I can't get it to work. I installed the exe and the ui files into the Contents/Resources/lib/Gimp/2.0/plug-ins folder. Reopened Gimp. Created a multi layer image yes all layers the same size. Export and scroll down to the extensions list. It only lists png no apng. Trying to save anyway as png results in no animation option. So then, deleting the original png file from the plugins folder (and keeping it on my desktop), reopened Gimp and started over. Now I have no option for png at all. Trying to save anyway as png gives me an invalid extension error where all I can do is hit ok and try another extension. Someone told me to put the plugin into the /Users/USERNAME/Library/Application Support/Gimp/plugins folder. Did that repeating all the steps and same thing. I don't know if it's just this particular plug in or plug ins in general though. Since posting this I've tried to get a few other plug ins and so far none of them work. Scripts I got. Plug ins no. Any help you can offer Partha, or anyone else with some insight as to what is going on, would be greatly appreciated. :)

Yes, my best guess is that you are using a Windows executable on a Mac. Can you provide a list of files that came with your apng plugin?

Thanks,
Partha

Yes i believe she is using the ones i provided. And they are windows executable, which i thought would work in Mac. After she told me she saw no extension listing i assumed the plugin needed to be compiled for a Mac environment. :)
Partha what about the object (o) files that windows compiles before the exe build. Will that work along with the ui file? I read somewhere Mac can run shared object files.

Well I've tried quite a few different ones by now lol and most of them come with just two files titled file-apng.exe and file-apng.ui a couple also had that extra dll and Rod (who deserves a six pack and a couple shots for trying so hard to help me ;) ) did give me one that also had a dll file but we weren't sure I really needed it we were just trying for the sake of trying lol sorry like I said I'm really kinda incompetent with all this technical stuff lol I'm a fast learner though I'm just new to it still. Hope that's the info you needed and thanks for trying to help! :)

No Rod. These are different beasts. The so (shared object) on an Mac is BSD not the same as Windows.
