This is just a simple wood effect that needs no pattern. It's all created via the script.maybe later i will add more options such as color, and pattern looks.

After you place the scm file in your scripts folder you will find it in Script-Fu>Text Effects>Wood Effect

Instructions for use-
Create a new doc any color
Create a new transparent layer with shape or text.
Select the text or shape layer
Run the script.

Results with default values on plain black text layer

Nice one Rod. Can't wait to see the wood grain, colors and burled effects added.

humm..maybe next a option for subtle blur and sharpening ?

Gaussian blur from 0.5 till 1.5 (i doubt more! ) should have a nice effect

and, but only if blur was chosen first, a bit of dark halo sharpening may boost even more the effect (without the blur applied first, it would instead mainly boost noise)

about "dark halo" sharpening there is a nice implementation in gmic (Enhance/sharpen/unsharpmask) if you want i may quickly arrange a preset (intending a reasonable default to call the gmic filter, the actual default would be not the best for this use)
