What would it take to create a script, or make it possible to have an animated splash screen for Gimp.
Dose anyone have any idea how this might be done?

It takes animated gif. No script is necessary. GTK that is responsible for GIMP initialization and opens up splash screen is able to read jpeg, png, gif and bmp file formats.
Create 'splashes' folder in GIMP user directory and place there as many splash images as you want, including gif animations. GTK will randomly pick one of the images every time it launches GIMP.

My ears were ringing, but I couldn't pinpoint where it was coming from.
Now I know...
Thanks! :bigthup

I've heard of the random splash screen launcher before, but have never implemented it.

Can you be more specific about where to create this new folder?
I know there's a folder named 'Images' and this is where I've been placing all of my Gimp Splash Screens.

Should I create a folder named 'splashes' and where should I create this folder at?
Also, is this GTK you speak of already installed with Gimp 2.6.8? Or is there something I need to do to have this GTK random splash screen launcher work with Gimp 2.6.8?

Sorry for all the questions... :?

Hello Wallace, long-time-no-see!

[user]\.gimp-2.8\splashes\gimp-splash.png

Gimp looks there first for a splash screen.
If it's not there just add it.
Gimp 2.8 splash screen is, 557 x 346.

This may help also as I've collected a few splashes but as yet no animated ones

Confirm, your gif loads just fine. Remove (temporarily) all your splash images from 'gimp-image' and 'splashes' folders, leave just this gif and launch GIMP.

What is in the user/.gimp 2.8 or pref/splashes folder always takes precedence to what is in your share/gimp/2.0/images folder can you post a screen shot of your splashes folder location or tell me exactly what gimp you are using

@ Graechan,

Here's the xcf file of the animated splash I called 'Creation'.

BTW...
What format other then gif are you referring to and is there another file type that can be used to save animation that I'm not aware of?
