Hi!
I want ask how to install gimp plugin registry under linux?
So here is my software: OS Opensuse 12.2 and Gimp 2.8.0. I have no experience how to compile files.
Or navigating files via terminal. I just have deleted windows from my pc.Why? Because any linux distro is more stable than windows. I have used windows os from year 1994. No more gray hair :)
And you can see- I am newbie with linux.
So I need install to my system normalmap plugin/gimp plugin registry. I have already those files in my
downloads file.Path is (I think): /home/juha/Downloads
So how to install normal map plugin or gim plugin registry? I really need that normal map plugin for my Blender 3D modeling/texturing. And do I need install any other stuff like depencies???

thank you space2010 :)

ps if you need any information, just ask.

In Ubuntu it would be easy, there's a Gimp distribution with Normalmap included. Maybe there's one for Opensuse?

Otherwise, you need to uncompress that .tar.bz2 package to some directory, compile that (there is probably compilation and installation instructions included) and finally you should copy the resulting executable to /home/juha/.gimp-2.8/plug-ins directory (which is probably hidden in your file manager).

I can't be more specific without knowing your system, but in mine, double-clicking .tar.bz2 opens Archive manager which allows opening the package.

Btw, if you are a Finn (wild guess from name), you can ask in Finnish from me.

Checked a bit. Package's INSTALL file says that
make
make install
should do the trick. (In terminal, in that directory where you uncompressed the files.)
Of course assuming that you have all dependencies i.e. all necessary libraries installed.
If that is done correctly, it will even copy the plugin to right place.

On the other hand, assuming Opensuse has a package manager, that gimp-normalmap may be installable package, which would be one-click option...

Yes you need to install Gimp first.

You would be better off asking in a SUSE forum, someone might already have it compiled.
but to show the sort of process that happens this is in LinuxMint Debian edition (more debian that mint)
To compile anything you need dev (or devel) packages depending on what you are doing

You might have gimp installed but that is not what is required.
So I already have libgimp2.0-dev and libgtk+2-dev installed. Now I run make and jump through hoops.

rich@linuxmintdeb:~/Downloads/gimp-normalmap-1.2.3$ make
gcc -c -O3 -Wall `pkg-config --cflags gtk+-2.0 gtkglext-1.0 gimp-2.0` normalmap.c
Package gtkglext-1.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `gtkglext-1.0.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'gtkglext-1.0' found
normalmap.c:26:21: fatal error: gtk/gtk.h: No such file or directory
compilation terminated.
make: *** [normalmap.o] Error 1

So it fails and looking at that, I need the gtkglext-1.0 package - that is the dev package
libgtkglext1-dev (1.2.0-2)
libxmu-dev (2:1.1.1-1)
libxmu-headers (2:1.1.1-1)
so I install that and it pulls in a couple of dependencies - try again

rich@linuxmintdeb:~/Downloads/gimp-normalmap-1.2.3$ make
gcc -c -O3 -Wall `pkg-config --cflags gtk+-2.0 gtkglext-1.0 gimp-2.0` normalmap.c
gcc -c -O3 -Wall `pkg-config --cflags gtk+-2.0 gtkglext-1.0 gimp-2.0` preview3d.c
preview3d.c:27:21: fatal error: GL/glew.h: No such file or directory
compilation terminated.
make: *** [preview3d.o] Error 1

still no good, this time not so obvious, but looking at that glew I install this
libglew-dev (1.7.0-3)

rich@linuxmintdeb:~/Downloads/gimp-normalmap-1.2.3$ make
gcc -c -O3 -Wall `pkg-config --cflags gtk+-2.0 gtkglext-1.0 gimp-2.0` preview3d.c
gcc -c -O3 -Wall `pkg-config --cflags gtk+-2.0 gtkglext-1.0 gimp-2.0` scale.c
gcc normalmap.o preview3d.o scale.o `pkg-config --libs gtk+-2.0 gtkglext-1.0 gimp-2.0 gimpui-2.0` -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lGLEW -o normalmap
rich@linuxmintdeb:~/Downloads/gimp-normalmap-1.2.3$

success. but it is very daunting for a newcomer.

I do not bother with a "make install", do not want it in the system folder, I copy the compiled plugin into ~/.gimp-2.8/plug-ins & make sure it is executable.

Works fine in Mint and as sometimes happens also in my regular PCLOS

You made a good start just a matter of finding the correct dev (or devel)packages

I'm not saying that Normalmap is a garbage plugin, but if you're quite serious about getting into 3D CG art, check out CrazyBump standalone program or it's free alternative InsaneBump (IB runs as standalone GUI using Python and GTK of the installed GIMP). In addition to normal map they generate diffuse, specularity and ambient occlusion maps. That is really making a huge difference for producing HQ textures in Blender. After using CrazyBump you'll never look back to NM. You're gonna need to install them via Wine for Opensuse, though, since both programs are written for Windows (CB has a Mac version).

The installer for InsaneBump is a little wacky.

Looks like the opensuse version of Normal Map is about ready.

@K1TesseraEna: CrazyBump is Windows app, InsaneBump seems also to be (unless you take sources and build it yourself). So it might not be solution, because at least CrazyBump can't be properly run with Wine. If you CAN use Windows apps, xNormal is also worthy and free.

@space2010: From those screenshots, it seems that you actually have at least some of the libs gcc says it can't find. It may just be some configuration issue, but I can't really say, maybe someone who knows Opensuse. But there seems to be precompiled plugins in that YaST2 display. Could there be a repository for Normalmap? One click solution would be nice.

I should probably have better knowledge about these, but form me 3D-Coat covers most of what Blender doesn't. 3D-Coat is native Linux app, but it's commercial and not exactly cheap.

Hey, Rod just found a solution?

@Rod, :ninja
