I don't know a thing about programming, but can this be duplicated? Not an exact copy per se, but something like it would be awesome. http://www.artistic-effects.com/3d-shadow/

Something like the default perspective filter but with python preview would be about correct i think. :)
On a side note this free shadow plugin will work through shellout>Xnview
I tried through Gimp last year and it doesn't show in the menus.
However artistic effects will. :)
You have to use a screenshot tool to get the rendered image though (Faststone works well)
As the filter utilizes PS layer styles which of course Gimp can not replicate....yet. :)

Artsistic effects isn't a free plugin however.

I downloaded and put it on PS plug-ins folder.
It shows up, shows the preview, but clicking OK nothing is produced.
As you mentioned, Rod, its generated layers are not supported by Gimp (yet)

You can of course just use the free 3D shadow filter through shellout also.

I believe in gmic there is a similar effect , not sure where , try to look in "lights and shadows" submenu
and may be a couple of script fu (alas script fu miss a preview) for similar effect (check for "3d" on www.gimpscript.com , ( or in the plugin registry )

I gave a try today to make a similar filter in G'MIC, definitely not user-friendly, but you can already do nice things with it (don't rely too much on the preview window :) ).
Maybe I'll try to improve it. Located in 'Testing / Ronounours / 3d shadow'.

There is a G'MIC>Lights and Shadows>Drop Shadow effect but doesn't have perspective settings.Perhaps David would look into this filter and possibly add them? :)

David you :ninja me. :lol

Thanks for the new filter.
