Not sure it is possible because before script could not call gegl operations and i am not sure now is changed
I remember was some third party equivalent of c2g that could be a solution ,but i still have to trace it back

Anyway
1 the term Colored c2g may seems a nonsense since C2G is basically to convert at best color images to greyscale
BUT i found the effect really nice somehow similar to HDR and often useful to reveal details

AFTER

more the concept is really simple :

if possible the script or plugin should

1) apply C2G on a duplicated layer
2) apply a slight blur on the colored original (this is needed to avoid sharp artifact when merging in color mode,
this blur does not blur the final result because sharpness derived from the other layer, the BW layer)
3) switch the c2g layer, in Value mode

4) optionally dup again the original layer and move on top in soft light mode

effect is quite strong , it enhance a lot the contrast without create too false colors

Long ago posted a lot of examples on the gimp group on flickr ...

It seems the image would need a lot of smoothing though.

i didn't get the gegl part of the question...
Your technique does a good job on shadow recovery but overblows highlights.
Look for a script that lifts shadows and tones down highlights + does color correction to boost
colors and midtone contrast mask.
I don't have gimp at the moment to check this out but i'm sure there are scripts with similar workflow

It depends a lot on the C2G parameters... which is the limit of scripting, because this technique is really spending much time trying out C2G settings to get the most out of the picture. Then the remaining operations are trivial...

No C2G:

The scripting stopper is that there is no GEGL (or C2g) access from the 'procedure browser',so I think you would need a plugin to do this

@Graechan , Ofnuts

I was thinking to ask a mod to lock this and start a new one because can't be right answer to a wrong question, and a similar questions may makes sense for who already wrote often scripts (as you both ) but more in general thinking better looks as a wrong approach to use GEGL Operation :

One of the main advantage of Gegl , according to the developers is to use "nodes", the advantage to use a nodal architepture is that nodes may be "chained " easily and all what i described (C2G,blur, apply merging modes ) correspond to some available gegl operation.

So the right question may be ,
anybody knows how EXISTING gegl nodes may be merged in a new operation ?
Or is intended to be easy, but only easy for rocket scientists ?

Just as paragon should be more easy then combine Gmic commands , or more complex

?
