Enviromap V1.5.1script assists in the rendering of environment maps suitable for use with GIMP’s Lighting Effect plug-in. The script uses a random seed, along with multiple user defined parameters, to generate endless variations of several types of environment maps. For examples of its use, see the Environment Mapped Text Tutorial.

Just create a new image with a minimum size of 400x400 pixels and run the script.

Ctrl-F will regenerate the map using a different random seed. By default, GIMP’s “Golden” gradient is used. However, you can choose any appropriate gradient to generate an environment map. The script supports the smooth topographical style map, as referenced earlier, as well as a cloud based map. You can select a Gradient or choose to use GIMP’s Active Gradient. You can blend the specified gradient back into either style map to create some unique, interesting and useful environment maps. User selects blend mode, shape and direction of gradients.

In addition, it’s useful to apply GIMP’s color setting to shift the hue or saturation/lightness on the rendered map to get the desired results for mapping.

Now supports spherical maps and interactive mapping to other objects via GIMP's map to object plug-in.

You can download EnviroMap V1.5.1 from Gimp Scripts.

Gimp crashes when i change the gradient....
i think thats a problem we had before with some other script that Graechan wrote, and i remember there was nothing you could do about it

so the manual procedure would be to:

render Solid Noise (2,8)
Autostretch HSV
Blur 5
Map Gradient

right ?

You must be using GIMP V2.8.4, Esper, which is the version that had the gradient bug. It was fixed in GIMP 2.8.6, along with several other annoying bugs. You might want to consider updating. :hehe

Yes, those are the manual steps, with the addition of ensuring there is no alpha channel, which the script does too.

Maybe I should make the blur value configurable as well.

Updated to V1.1

Thanks to he4rty for giving me the idea to blend back in the gradient via blend modes. :bigthup

There are two variations of maps that can be rendered, both with the blend mode feature added. Combined with multiple user parameters for tweaking, this script will render endless variations of environment maps suitable for use with the lighting effects plug-in.

Thank You for the updated version. This script is gold, or any other color I want, but it's gold I tell you.

Updated with support for gradient blend direction and gradient shape.

I figure more flexibility yields better results. :bigthup

GnuTux have you thought about taking the next step of combining it with lighting effects and a a text to create the whole effect.

1/ Input layer should have alpha
2/ create selection and save as channel then select none and blur
3/ add layer below input layer and apply enviromap
4/ run lighting effects using channel as bumpmap and bottom layer as environment map

Graechan, I have already written a stand alone logo script that I'm calling EnviroLogo, which can be used in conjunction this script, as well.

Adding in a few options to the EnviroMap script, as you suggest, might be a good option too.

I hope to post the beta version of EnviroLogo script later tonight. :bigthup

You're welcome, Rod!

@Graechan - I like the workflow you suggest. Why don't your fork this script into another one using your method?

I'm gonna keep developing a stand alone version of this script because it can be used to generate cool patterns and backgrounds too, not just emaps.

The EnviroLogo Script I'm developing will be stand along as well. I think I'm just going to incorporate some code from this script into the EnviroLogo script, so it can generate emaps when one is not specifically selected.

EnviroMap updated to V1.3. :hehe

Added the option to use Active Gradient in the "Map Type" drop down, per Esper's request. Selecting one of these options will direct the script to use GIMP's currently active gradient, rather than the Gradient selected in the script's input dialog.

Also, added the option to apply a Gaussian Blur to the final rendered Emap, per Rod's request.
