This is kind of a fun and pretty plug-in. You have to do alpha to selection with the text before you run it. I like the glossy, plastic effect on the filled text.

The top one is stroked
The bottom one is filled.

I am attaching the zipped plug-in because it's a copy and paste one into a text document. I had to make it executable to have it work. Unzip into the .gimp-2.6 / plug-ins folder.

Played with it earlier. Pretty cool results. To 2-ton; you have to have GIMP Python installed which for Windows version is not installed by default. If you do have Python, then all you have to do is copy the python file in your GIMP Plugins folder. :)

O, that is very cool! And what makes it even cooler is that it doesn't have to be used on text:

This image was made using the brush pipe, I held it in the same position and completed a rotation. then I selected the resulting star-shape using Select by color tool. Last I ran the Glossy Stroke 3D.

For a very weird effect, try using your spider brush...

Making shapes with the paths tool is still not my strong point. But attempted a candy cane.

If you fill what's on the stroke layer with a pattern you can get nice effects. :)

I don't have python, and am sort of waiting for the new and improved gimp (2.8) before I try to add a bunch of stuff.

Wow, everyone is coming up with really great stuff with this plug-in. What a fun one.

Canes and spiders and snowmen and text and shiny things, oh my.

Thank you Oregonian.

A year later, I was looking for a plugin I thought I put somewhere and stumbled upon this board.

Wow! I can't believe what you all managed to do with this. If you liked it, that was definitely worth the little time spent.

Now let's hope it works for me on Gimp 2.6.11. Already late for the Season Greetings, really have no time to fix it :)

Update: Still goes. For the linux folks, put it in $HOME/.gimp-2.6/plug-ins, remove the .txt extension, chmod +x to make it executable and start GIMP. The effect should be available as a Light and Shadow filter.

Happy New Year,

Welcome to the forums kelk1! :)
Thanks for such a great plugin too!
Does this post mean you updated the filter? I have the one from December-2010 still.
Works great in either Gimp-2.6.11 and Gimp-2.7.5 (Partha.coms version. and the new RGGJan Fork)

If you just updated it i would love to try it out.

Am I the only one having the problem of the script window being too big for my screen?

Almost
Somehow i may still click on the very upper edge of the ok button (i can't read ok, but it was the fight guess)

before it was more serious and i could not reach the button, i changed the font and fontsize used by gimp (before was some fancy font, now is a more classic, Garamount. and i also shrink a bit font size, and that fixed...almost fixed anyway now i may reach ok and cancel of all plugins

Yep that's the quick fix just as PC said.Change the font size in the gimprc file.
I use comic sans ms in mine and haven't had any trouble with large windows since.
You can also just remove some toggles from the script but that kind of ruins the functionality doesn't it? :)
I had this same problem with animated flames filter. Nice to have all those options but Gimp doesn't know how to create dialogs with enough rows for value adjustment sliders.
I have not had problems with large windows after changing my font size to 10.
You may want to experiment with font faces though.

"font size" is especially for fancy fonts a very vague indication.

basically at the same "font size" 2 different fonts may have totally different size (often gigantic for extra fonts)
if you have a font manager you may see by yourself simply confronting the same script created with different font of the "same" size

Font size give useful info only for very standard fonts (as arial , verdena, etc)...i have no clear how the "size" is measaured but weird as may sound seems not directly connected with the height or the wideness of the font

here is needed a image or you will think me nut:

here a confront of a few font AT THE SAME SIZE (16) with the same text sample

Confront the 2 framed in red. one is "Action Comic extended" and is more then 2x taller and more then 3x wider then "adobe arabic"

So don't trust the "theoretic" size (and don't use font as "Action Comic extended" for the gimp menu )

OMG this is great!!!! I've been looking for something that does this to objects that aren't text! It seems as if all 3-d things are for text only! Thank you!

Question...can this be done without the gloss as well?
