3D Extrusion - Release V2.3

This script extrudes the image or selection in a given layer or layer group, while maintaining the original layer or selection. By default, the original layer or selection is positioned just above the extrusion. This allows you to use the original as an "End Cap" , which can be tweaked to add contrast/effects to the extrusion. If "Overlay With Pattern" is checked, an additional layer containing the selected pattern is added just above the original layer and set to "Overlay Mode". If "Extrude With Pattern" is checked, the original is layer is overlaid and merged with the selected pattern, which is then extruded. This results in the original layer being "Patternized" (not a real word). Selecting both "Overlay With Pattern"" and "Extrude With Pattern" can result in the pattern more effectively wrapping around the edges of the extrusion, if that is the desired result. Duplicating the pattern overlay several times and merging the duplicated layers together, can result in a more pronounced pattern overlay, but the result may require some contrast/lightness/saturation tweaking. Don't forget to set the duplicated and merged layers back to "Overlay Mode".

If "Merge Extrusion" is checked, the original layer is merged with the extruded layer (pattern overlay is not merged with this operation).

The Bump Map options are used to add light, shadow and depth to the original layer or selection, before it's extruded. This is necessary to add needed contrast to the extrusion. Tweak/Match the Bump Map parameters to the extrusion type & direction for best results from this script.

Features
Directional, Shrink & Zoom Extrusion Options
All Bump Map Options On Entry Screen
Ability To Create A Pattern Overlay & Extrude With A Pattern
Option To Merge Extruded Layer With Original
Layer Group Support In GIMP 2.8.x
Backward Compatible With GIMP 2.6.x

I like the way you combined the curved text with the extrusion, Rod.

I have some ideas for more enhancements to it and I'll be incorporating the techniques into a couple of other scripts, as well.

Here's a result of a heart ding, filled & colored with Logo Toolbox, extruded with added lighting effects and finished off with GMIC dream smoothing. :hehe

Hi swathi,

You can get that exact result with this script. :bigthup

I can't wait to see how you update and add more enhancements to this one. :)
I actually used this for my 3D grassy transparent (fake) splash screen. :lol

A regular drop shadow blurred and a perspective shadow at 17 degrees.

3D Extrude works excellent Tux.

I found some interesting old Scheme code on the internet for doing 3D extrusion and have brought it up to date. The code was written in German by Frans Rijven and I've translated, debugged, documented and enhanced it to create a pretty nice 3D Extrusion script. The script uses Bump Mapping and GIMP's 2D Transform code for the extrusion.

It currently extrudes the image in a selected layer. In the next release, I'll add support for extruding an arbitrary selection within a layer.

The script can be downloaded from GIMP Scripts here.

The script is located under Filters/Render/3D Extrusion...

It works with GIMP 2.6.x & GIMP 2.8.x. Please feel free to post any comments, suggestions or questions. I hope you find it useful.

I love this filter, thank you for sharing Tux

Cool one, Molly. I like the rainbow of colors you got on the extrusion!

Thanks, I stroked it with my noise pattern at 6 pixels. On the text I filled it with the bling bubbles patterns.

For the b/w images it would be great to have as an option the extrusion based on image's height(depth) map.
Although, without it I get an interesting effect too.
