Pretty sure Lyle is talking about a horizon point? A invisible point on a horizontal line in the image where all perspective draws a line to. (for the actual field of depth effect).
Example..

I'm assuming that instead of translating each new layer along an x/y axis, it's a zoom/scale of each new layer.

I went ahead and added that feature.

Cool Tux; look forward to trying it out once it's released to GIMPScripts. :)

That looks nice but what Font is that?
Is the left leg of the M thinner than the right on the font? or does it just look that way after running the script?

I've updated 3D Extrusion to V2.1, which now supports directional, shrink & grow/zoom extrusion options. I've removed the "End Cap" option because I already keep the original text/image layer. If you're performing multiple selection extrusions on the same image, having a separate end cap can be useful, but for the most part, it seems redundant. I've also simplified merging by having the option to merge the extrusion (or not). These feel like the best options, at least for now.

The script can be downloaded from GIMP Scripts here.

@ Molly - The final result appears that way because each extruded layer is scaled from the center point and yes, the font is responsible for the different sizes of the M's legs.

@ he4rty - My results from testing a fade option didn't turn out too well. The opacity of each layer combines and kills the fade effect. I'm attaching a 15 layer xcf test file. Maybe we can come up with a method that gives us the results you're after.

Adding the shrink type of Xtrusion is a huge improvement, Tux!
Nice examples too.
Grow on text doesn't look very impressive but could be awesome with some other stuff.

Growing only along the x-axis, which is more like Lyle's example, might be a good option to add. :bigthup

@ Tux... Love this script! :jumpclap

I also like the pattern/texture you used in your example image below, and was wondering how I might acquire this pattern/texture for myself?

Yes something does look very wrong. Where's your pattern overlay at?

@Wallace - That pattern is called neurons.

@Graechan - The pattern overlay just generates an overlay pattern to combine with whatever text/image you already have, using the available layer modes (Default Overlay Mode). You could use other layer modes, such as multiply, to get the full pattern, say over white text. In your example, the bright red text is not going to show that overlay pattern. You would need to shift the layer mode to hard light, for example, for the pattern to show up on the text. Also, the bump parameters are critical to the extrusion, because the bump is what adds contrast to the text (or image), before it's extruded. Without the contrast provided by the bump, the extrusion is just a blob of the same color or pattern.

Unlike the Logo Toolbox script, this script doesn't fill with a pattern. It simply extrudes what's there, so you would need to start with patterned filled text, then extrude, to get the result you're after with this script. Use the Logo Toolbox script to fill, bevel and extrude, all at once.

Start with this..
Image

Extrude and Hue/Contrast shift the extrusion.

You would need to start with blue text to get that result from that overlay.

OK, Cool. Zooming only along the x-axis results in kind of a wrap around effect. I'll make sure to add that option to the next release. :bigthup
