I've had this script on my hard drive for quite a while. It appears not to be working in 2.8.10. It starts up but then just sits there for ages without anything happening. I've not really used it in ages but I know there's a lot of people here who like looking into these old scripts, so I thought I'd post it in case anyone wants to have a look at it and maybe do an update.

I just tried it in gimp-2.8.10 (64-bits).
I made a sphere and filled it and left the selection on. I opened the planet-ring, the dialogue came up, I clicked OK on default settings, the dialogue turned gray and just sat there. The only way I could get out of it was to exit out of Gimp.
I also ran the script at default without a layer, I went back and read the script and it is supposed to create the layer same thing happens, nothing
Since it was written back in 2008, it is probably outdated.

AFAIK it creates a new image, so a bit of work to get it round a planet ;)

Looks good rich, I am using 64 bit so maybe that is the problem why mine just sits there.

There were problems with the random number generation in this script, which might cause it to hang.

I'm attaching an updated version with better random number generation (seeds from system clock).

Thanks Tux, it's working fine now. Much as I wish I did understand this script stuff I don't, but there's plenty of people around here who do. :cool :tyspin
