The script is attached and fixes a bug causing an undo error.
The script name is the same so just replace the existing one you have in your scripts folder with the new one here.
I will be removing the original embroider script so there is no download confusion.

Install - Place the SCM file in your scripts folder.
Go to Filters>Script-Fu>Refresh Scripts or Start GIMP.

You will find the filter under Script-Fu>Rod>Artistic>
You can however change this menu location to whatever suits you.

I decided to remove only the older script and not the entire older topic so the instructions for use and images are still available.

Sorry it took so long to post the new script guys working and sleeping are taking a lot of my time lately.

rod: thank you for that! i've had lots of fun with the old script despite some problems, but it's always nice to get the 'new improved' toy .

Here is my stab at it. I ran the script default, duplicated the base text, changed layer mode to Grain Merge > selection to path, select none, open path dialogue and stroked it one pixel with black.

I need to re write this filter so it will follow a text layer fill path. This way it will make the stitches along a user created path. Ofnuts already has written a script in Python to do this. His Path Decorations filters.

Anywho this is how i fake the effect with my script.
What i do is create 2 layers
1) for horizontal values
1) for vertical values

Then i paint lines (colored or not), on each layer according to their direction.
ie all vertical lines painted go in the "horizontal value" layer, and all horizontally painted lines go on the "vertical values" layer.
This way when i run the script on either i set the values in the script dialog accordingly for each layer name. This gives more of a sewed directional look. Other wise a horizontal stitch on the top of for instance the letter R looks too long.
If i paint that top line of the R on a separate layer and run the script with vertical values it will look much better.
