I'm not sure exactly what you mean, SysTemX but if you run the plug-in Interactively from BRL, you can select any image that's loaded into GIMP to be used as a map.

Still coming to terms with BRL but slowly getting the hang of it. Tried it on some Celtic jewelry images (not high quality) with some 'home made' gradients.

Was going back in this thread to review and to see where my results could improve. Somehow missed this. Must have skipped this page trying to soak up knowledge. Thanks Gnu Tux, haven't tried the EMaps, only used gradients so far. Seeing your result with my map and the possibilities with the downloaded ones suggests the time to start is now.
