I've been working on updating the ML Bevel Reflect Plug-in that's used by the Bevel Reflect Logo script. The main limitation is that the amount of beveling (slope depth) is hard coded into the plug-in. I suppose the author of the plug-in was attempting to get the maximum beveling, so as to produce the best reflective effect. Well, there are times when I want less beveling and a flatter slope.

I've fixed that problem by adding an option to control the bevel amount (slope depth) for each of the three slope types.

ML Bevel Reflect V2.0 is available for download on GIMP Scripts.

Here are some of examples of the results I'm getting, now that I have more control over the depth.

Wow, those are the ultimate. I love them all, but I especially like the Peachy one. It looks like milk glass to me. Really cool.

EDIT: On the peach one, it looks like you could take a putty knife and lift the text off and eat it as a gummy bear or jube-jube. You could make a bunch of alphabets out of it and put them in a bowl.

I absolutely like the results, also think the entire 'Slope Option' block of BR plugin has to be reviewed.

Normally, this kind of effect is defined by two main functions - the extrude depth and the bevel contour(s).
Say I'm a newbie, and I am confused - how's Round 1 Depth 7 is different from Round 2 Depth 1?

Slope options weren't very intuitive approach in the first place if you asked me.
Since the original author is outta the question you are the only person who can get it right Tux. Your thoughts?

Thanks, Molly. I'm pretty happy with the results so far.

You bring up an interesting point, K1TesseraEna.

I'm not sure what the best terminology to use would be, but I'm open to suggestions. Here is the way options are now termed.

Slope Options

FLAT
From left to right: Flat with no smoothing, Flat with smoothing, Flat with less depth.
ImageImageImage
I suppose this could be considered a Flat Slope or a Flat Bevel. In other words, it is not really a curved slope. Adjusting the smoothing parameter does round the sharp edges. I believe this type of bevel is sometimes referred to as chiseled. When I decrease the depth, it also decreases the reflectivity.

ROUND1
From left to right: Round1 (Default Depth of 7), Round1 (Depth of 4), Round1 (Depth of 2).
ImageImageImage

ROUND2
From left to right: Round2 (Default Depth of 20), Round2 (Depth of 7), Round2 (Depth of 4).
ImageImageImage

There are differences in the various types of slopes/bevels but I'm not sure how to describe those differences to avoid any confusion. The user is probably just going to have to test out these options interactively to see how their images react to changes in slope types and their corresponding parameters.

I'm certainly open to any ideas.

You certainly put a lot of work into this, thanks Tux. I can't wait for the new release.

Hi,

Really cool script ! Is this updated version already at gimpscript website?

I wish ideas like this one can be adopted by gimp developers to accelerate the implementation of the layer effects planned to be available only after gimp 3.0

Sorry josephbupe it's the plugin that GnuTux is trying to update as well as the script to accommodate the new settings and it's not ready yet

I suggest that when you leave the new version, all who post their results in this thread also publish the settings and the font name, as this will help us make our first experiments already knowing what the results are. This step is important for beginners to take ownership of the new tool.

Thanks, folks!

@Carlos - Good suggestion.

@josephbupe - I didn't get a chance to work on it much this weekend, but I should have it ready in the next couple of days.

@Molly - You do get good reflectivity with that option. Sometimes though, that's just too much bevel depth for a given application and a flatter bevel would be better.

Plugin ready (ML BR) - but we are waiting for a change in the Bevel Reflect Logo?
If the plugin ready - please share - Your new results look very interesting!

GnuTux, is this update for both Bevel Reflect Logo and ML Bevel Reflect or is this update only for ML Bevel Reflect? I'm confused.

New updates for both the ML Bevel Reflect plug-in and the Bevel Reflect Logo script are now up on Gimp Scripts.

Both of these need to be updated on your PC, as they work together. I don't yet have a 32bit Windows version of the plug-in, so I'm attaching the source code, in hopes someone will compile it for me.

See the first post in this thread for more details.

Thanks to Graechan for compiling the Windows 64bit version.

Thank you GnuTux. Hopefully someone will compile a windowsx32 bit.

Stay well.
