thank Rod , both work well
i am just a bit puzzled by the vanished button but everything works

A bit off topic ,Rod did you tried to use the MareroQ resource manger ona portable ?
Would be really handy , to quickly switch off/on groups of resources ...also for file size because support zipped resources.

I think it should, this build is supposed to be installed directly on the drive :

So paths should remain always the same ...except for the main drive letter
:gaah

EDIT i missed this update ! viewtopic.php?f=9&t=7171&start=0&hilit=addon+manager
I go there to check better (AARGH is a 9 pages topic :roll: )

Maybe the Preferences menu should be controlled
on my computer in many cases it doesn't work as if was locked and ...just doesn't take the inputs

As eamples i could not uncheck the boxes of the tools sharing same setting, they just remain marked

and i can't add new paths in preference/folder

It is necessary to follow the structure of preferences and not add subdirectories.
If you want to add resources, you must place them in existing subdirectories.

I see but is not the only issue with preferences , the OK button is locked with most of other options ,

And many option boxes can't be marked or unmarked, are not responsive to clicks as example can't be changed the option to use same brush for all the brush tools

Do not put the \Preferences directory in read-only mode because it blocks the changes.

I didn't put in read only mode !

But you are right , the preferences directory (as everything included in your zip) was in read only mode.

In theory Gimp in read only mode should not run at all , that would be bad but would also give a more clear hint of what the problem and how fix
Instead it run without even causing error messages but alas with several functions locked ...kind of weird

:wow :yes It was that "read only" propriety to screw up everything
Even all the weird problems of the gui are gone :jumpclap :hi5

more the little button for quickmask is now back. :clap

:tyspin

EDIT :gaah

Change propriety solve ...Alas only for 1 session :hoh
then something happens that revert the propriety of the main gimp folders and of all the subfolders to "read only" ...again and again.

Now i am looking for a way to give the command as super admin, to be certain would be accepted , i can't imagine other solutions

EDIT 2

I am not alone to be victim of the "read only " spell
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-files/in-windows-8-64-can-not-remove-read-only-attribute/b21c0629-58dd-477d-ae06-39c982b1cdd1
The same as reported except that in my case the folder was not in program folder , yet is protected even more then the folder in program files
From what i read there it seems may be solved only by a DOS command :gaah

Windows 8 : There is no problem to remove mode "read only".
"Dos" : look at the command "attrib" (for help help attrib ).
You can download the latest version of the archive (updated).

Usually there is no problem
but in this case seems impossible , not the admin but only "SYSTEM" ( 8 itself) has full control on THAT extracted folder. (that is very unusual) and permissions can't be changed

At least from graphical interface is impossible remove THAT peculiar "read only" :
The command seems accepted BUT the whole gimp folder remain in read only mode

About the DOS command i never used DOS commands

i hope your new build solve , i am looking now

Personally I have no problem to change the attributes of files and directories (tested on XP, W7 and W8).
The files (gimprc, etc.) are created when you first launch Gimp and do not exist in the archive (check the settings of your system).

That i solved but no joy

most of Preferences remain locked , not only for add new paths for addon (you already advised me ), but for most of the other functions there

Where no similar problems in your other builds but only in the last (also in the &4_32 portable version based on last partha build).

Also for me is a problem the impossibility to add new paths/subfolders , i need to run gimp with different configurations (photo editing , painting.. ) and be able to quickly switch from one to another

Maybe i can solve with a resource manager (as viewtopic.php?f=9&t=7171 )...do you know if your build may support a resource manager ?

I do not understand your problems and what you want to do.
I'm testing on many computers, and none have these problems of subdirectories.

*****

If you want to create a new folder preferences you can edit the "Parametres_Gimp_Lang.ini" file.
Especially do not change subdirectories.

Example
Replace :
[GIMP_Lang_6]
Language=es
GIMP_EXE=gimp-2.8.exe
GIMP_Preferences_Folder=Preferences
GIMP_Splash=share\gimp\2.0\images\gimp28es.png
GMIC_Filters_Folder=GMIC_Filters

By
[GIMP_Lang_6]
Language=
GIMP_EXE=gimp-2.8.exe
GIMP_Preferences_Folder=PhotoComix
GIMP_Splash=
GMIC_Filters_Folder=GMIC_PhotoComix

Start Gimp with "GIMP_ES.exe" and look what happens.
You can rename "GIMP_ES.exe".

To avoid confusion better for now leave out the problems of subdirectories.:

In preferences i stumbled on many other issues here a example

Image

Basically most of options (again i am leaving out all the "folder" section, that is another matter) are locked , could be changed only by editing the gimprc file

I already tested it several times and there is no problem. It comes from your system ...
I repeats for the last time : It's your system that created these files.

@PhotoComix I don't know if this will help, but I ran into similar programs on a new computer with win7. Found out that my Comodo Firewall was running some programs that it did not reconize, in sandbox mode. This prevented me from making changes.

There has many things that can block a program, some examples:
- Antivirus.
- Attributes of directories.
- User rights.
- Etc.
