25 August: Second panel on page 4!

17 August: Update on page 2!

6 August: Update on page 2!

Original post:
I started a new drawing project.

Someday we might be able to mine resources from asteroids. I thought I'd draw up a concept. It's not much to look at so far, but hopefully over the next couple weeks it'll come out nice.

I modeled this with ketchup.

Thanks :)

Most of my larger drawings have an image like this. This particular image won't be part of the actual drawing. It'll live on a permanently hidden layer and be used with the selection tool, so that I can still easily select particular areas when they are full of color and shade.

I need to do the landscape, but I'm having trouble thinking of something interesting.

Seldom i like sketch up model but i like your seems a pretty could start

May i ask you the sketch up file , not the render but the 3D ?
In case i am sure i will end up with something very different even as shapes :

I seldom worked with vector and 3D (except 3d fractal ) but here i am tempted the idea would be:

1) make several renders , with different view, rotation zooms
2) Edit the render as vectors or bitmap , mirroring and distorting (for distort scale changing image ratio give cool result
3) Compose
4) Well here the hardest part colour nicely

Just a spinning idea ignited by your model, even if you agree i am not sure if i would proceed for other projects going and luck of experience with 3d and vector graphic ...even if convert in large hi res bit map and then back to vector should be simple because well definite black lines on a white BG
Anyway in am impatient to see the painting ...

Thanks for the support!

The beginning is always the most challenging part.

Sure, I'll release the sketchup file. It's on my WIN laptop, which I can't access right now. When I can, though, I'll grab it and upload it.

I did the background as a separate image. I thought it might make for a neat "before and after" comparison. Here's the landscape, no structures yet.

Also, reminds me I need to find the sketchup file. It's on my Win7/Ubuntu laptop, which is usually in "Ubuntu mode".

It's simple so far, but it does have nice depth.
Nice work so far! :D

When you first posted saying you did a model in ketchup i thought you really meant ketchup as in ketchup and mustard. :lol
I was hoping to see some food art but this is really cool. Wouldn't it be neat if we could someday mine orbiting asteroids? Maybe we should just to get them down to a manageable size in case of impact. :)

*Sketchup :hehe

Now that I think about it some more, I can't think of any asteroids with atmospheres. Maybe this should be a new planet.

Just needs a name.

merrak: the landscape looks very promising, but isn't it rather soft looking for an asteroid? i always pictured them full of rough surfaces and sharp edges.

Thanks, and yes, "asteroid" was most likely a misnomer. I'd rather change the name than the drawing :)

I'm thinking of doing this as a triptych showing the colonization of a new planet, rather than mining an asteroid.

Here's a piece of panel 2. I think my figures look a bit stiff, though :/ Not sure how to address that.

Image

I think this will now be a tetraptych, showing four stages of the development of a colony.

Desolation
Exploration (this snippet)
Colonization
Civilization

This one is pretty simple, mostly a few scattered lights and a few ships cruising the mountainscapes. The next two will be significantly more work.
