I was also able to bump and environment map the golden pattern to itself without a grayscale image.
I opened the gradient image and ran lighting effects selecting the image as its own maps. :)

I call this golden sahara.

Any image/pattern can be used as an environment map. You need to open or create the environment map as a new image and make sure it doesn't contain an alpha channel , then it will show up in the dialog. ;) Just use it in conjunction with your bump map.

You can get decent results using emaps. Here is an example using a map Drac provided in this thread.

I like the glossy surface. A very neat work.
For jagged edges, Have you tried G'MIC 'remove hot pixels'? And as Wallace says, then a smoothing filter as 'anisotropic smoothing'.

Thanks Tux. Nicely done. :)

YAFU - Thanks - I am still experimenting. :bigthup
Esper if you are using the gradient map i provided it should work by just opening that image in GIMP and running lighting effects. It should show up in bump and env maps drop downs.

In one image, only have your text on a transparent background on top and your bump map on a 2nd layer, then open your environment map as a 2nd image. Select the text layer in the 1st image and open the Lighting plug-in. That always works for me.

When i created the golden text that i posted here
i created a bump map image in grayscale. (blurred text)
i opened an RGB image same size (new image)
i opened the RGB gradient as its own image

Then i ran lighting effects and that worked.
golden gradient RGB - env map
grayscale image - bump map
new RGB image same size as bump map image - ran lighting effects

Saved as new image in the lighting effects filter (which i probably didn't have to do) :)

It also worked by using just the gradient image (RGB).

All I can find about the photoshop fragment filter is it "Creates four copies of the pixels in the selection, averages them, and offsets them from each other."

I'd like to know what it actually does, as it should be possible to replicate.

Yep. The image needs to RGB (or indexed) with no alpha. :bigthup

Another side note, I tend to get smoother results with environment maps when I set the bump curve to linear and the depth low, like all the way down to 0.01.

Thanks Rob.
It takes a selection or an object on a transparent layer (also works on channel layers), and gives it a sort of an offset gradient depth. Here is an example in PS.

Here it is after running 3 consecutive times. It doesn't have an interface dialog by the way.

Here's another result utilizing an enviromap, with a bit more bevel from the bump.

This is amazing right down to the minutiae of detail.

okay, i finally got it to work, still not sure what i did :yes :lol

what does the environment map actually do, overlay the texture or is it something like gradient mapping ?

because this is my result, with 50ies grey text and the envorinment map enabled (kind of ugly)
Image

and this is lighting effects directly on the environment-map pattern (better but different)
Image

and number two with some colored lights added

Here are a couple of explanations of environment mapping..

http://web.cs.wpi.edu/~matt/courses/cs5 ... e/env.html
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reflection_mapping

This is linked from the GIMP docs.
http://www.home.unix-ag.org/simon/gimp/golden.html

Here are my results of environment mapped text, with additional lighting added.
