I mentioned I was working on a project - I "am" but I decided before I continue with a project as big as that was I'd do smaller ones first to get better at it. So First thing on the menu of "to learns" - Character Design that's consistent!

As said, I'm working on character design (No school, just God, me, and internet links. lol), it's really hard for me to draw the same thing twice; I can draw the same character and you can tell it's the character but things like hair unless SUPER simplified I cannot repeat. - Mei for example I can make her because she has no "hair" only 2 ears that are like rabbit ears so that's pretty simple! (I suddenly wanna draw Mei! xD)

This is my attempt to fully develop a character, giving him a back story (Which means writing!), trying to have him come alive, to have emotions and stuff like that. I might make this a topic as I develop him more I'll update it. Kinda like journal it as I go. Hopefully this will keep me motivated enough to keep coming back to this topic and character until I'm "finished"! :D

So here Exibit A:
In this I'm attempting to mark off what is easily identifiable so as to be able to repeat him over and over again later!
I was using a sketch I drew on paper as a reference and worked my way off of that.

Front view -
I named him Benoni meaning "sorrowful" to have more impact in his current state, but later becomes happy!
I'm known for happy stuff for a reason! I always gotta give a happy ending! :yes :cool

Name: Benoni
Character Type: Scarecrow
Personality: Sad and Pessimistic, also Bitter - Later is Renewed and joy is redeemed in him.

Update 1; New Sketches!
Okey, I didn't want this thread to be forgotten!
Here are some pencil sketches of Benoni!
I wasn't aiming for the same face shape each time for the expressions I was just adding a "face" to not have things look awkward. xD

Front, 3/4th, and side view (side with the patch).
Also some expressions: Sad, happy, shocked(!), shy/blushing, winking.

Image

It was so much easier to sketch with a pencil than trying to get things "perfect" with a mouse.......! @_@

Update 2 and 3:
Update 2:
I colored the pro-to-type image! I might color it again in another style until I see a style I like.
I'm pretty happy with this though! :D

Edit: I forgot to mention, I colored using GIMP (making the image an .ora because MyPaint won't open .png for some reason :S) MyPaint>GIMP>MyPaint>GIMP.

Image

Image

Update 3:

[spoil]I made a video while coloring in "Update 2".
Link
Enjoy! :D
[/spoil]

Update 4:
Okay, I workesd today making 2 more styles!

The first one is just the first colored one with added outline. -The second one is a totally cartoon version!
Image Image

The cartoon version was colored almost entirely in GIMP, I just added the stitches using a "sewing" brush and the light blot on the nose in MyPaint. - And I outlined the over version in GIMP.

All 3 styles!
Image

Edit:I recorded doing the 2 other styles as well!

CnC, tips and the like are all welcomed!

~ God Bless ~

mokonafan: he looks good to me :). but maybe i've seen too many bad horror movies, because the patched face instantly makes me think of evil characters. it's obvious from a second glance he's not meant to be evil, but if more people get those horror movie associations you might want to make at least one of his eye brows less angry, to take away the impression.

Ah! Well I don't want him to look "Evil" just bitter and maybe a bit "on edge".
Hmmm! I'll have to have a talk with him and tell him to not scare people...!
Irony at work - Scarecrow but don't scare anyone. :lol

Glad you think he looks good, though. :tyspin :hi5 :D

mokonafan: hehe, have a talk with him, but don't be too strict with him unless more of the gimp chat crowd think "horror movie!" when they see him. he shouldn't have to suffer for my bad taste in movies. :hehe

:lol Okey-Dokey! xD
I doubt it's your taste in movies, probably more the lack of talent from movie producers. :lol

Thankfully, I don't watch those kind of horror movies. I imagine he's quite a lonely character and seems quite grumpy to most people and many probably dislike him because of it but inside he's really just very sad. A very realistic character and, as usual, very well drawn.

He's coming along nicely. The expressions are easy to read and I think you've achieved a pretty good likeness from image to image and that isn't easy. Great work.

mokonafan: you are making some fantastic progress, sister! i agree with erisian, the expressions are easily readable and the character is recognizable from sketch to sketch. you're obviously learning lots from all your excersises.

:hi5 Yay Thank you! :D
I'm glad you think so! :D

I colored the original sketch, I think the coloring made him less "horror movie-esque." :lol - I might make another version in another style, just to feel out the spans of what I can play with! :D

Bigger version of colored in first post!

A fun character! Your first version is maybe less clear than in its detail, but the eyebrows are more visible in the more cartoony version, making its "expression" clearer than in the first one. Due to this I think the more cartoony version is probably my favourite. :)
As others have pointed out, stitched scarecrow-faces are often interpreted as evil. So it's good that this face is reasonably roundish in face, it gives him a more child-friendly touch.

Really like design 3, the colours stand out more giving more character to the face, on the whole just seems more interesting to look at compared to the others.

I'm glad you like him! Thank You For The Comment/Compliment! :D

Hmm! I actually liked the first one best, it seemed softer and less scary but still with a disposition!
But I think in general I'm going to draw in the last style because it's easier to do.
I understand the "stitched" face can be seen as scary! I think it's because he's not happy like most of my characters is the reason he looks evil, I've drawn many scarecrows with happy faces and they are stitched to the hilt and they look cute. :D
