"Head for the next Drambuie cloud Sulu!" The universe is a wild and fascinating place but I often wonder how scientists can possibly be certain of these things. How can they analyse the chemical structure of a cloud from such a vast distance? I am aware that they commonly tell us something is a fact only to many years later, say "we got that wrong - we now believe something totally different" It's caused me to take a lot of science with a pinch of salt but while it stands, it's a fascinating concept. Thank you for that PC.

Scientists are certain only in the mass media simplifications

I remember a anecdote from Stephan Hawking :
he was doing a conference explaining his theory on the origins of the Universe and was interrupted by a old lady ,that said his theory was just a nonsense ,
because as everybody should known the Universe was created, and carried around by the Big Turtle

The point here was that Stephen Hawkins could only reply that his Theory seemed more alike , but on the other hand he admitted that was impossible proof the old lady's theory of the Big Turtle wrong :rofl

So even if some scientist may found convincing , as example the Big Bang or the Superstring theories , they could not exclude that instead the Beginning of our universe was caused by a Big Fart of the Big Cosmic Gorilla

:rofl I'm not usually one to run down anybody's beliefs and I have seen intelligent logic in conspiracy theories, paranormal theories and religious and quasi-religious theories as well as some of the more bizarre "scientific" theories but even I couldn't control my laughter at the thought that there are still people in the world who believe in the Giant Turtle theory! :rofl Each to their own! :)

Mostly because each type of molecule absorbs some very specific wavelengths, so it has a "signature". See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectrophotometry
