I have gimp 2.8 installed on all my machnes. that is two window boxes and an ubuntu machne. Color picker doesnt work on any of them. I know this is a common issue but have they figured out how to fix it? i have tried the hot key of ctrl click but only sometimes does that work. haha

thanks

If your double click on your colors bg or fg, you will see a color picker there and it works very well.

That option is only active when you are using the Pencil, Paintbrush, Eraser, or Ink tools.

correct, i k now where it is but when i click on a color on any image opened in gimp or on my current layer, it defaults to black and thats it. i have tried it with all painting tools and etc. i have googled it and it seems to be a bug that certain users get.

the hot key option is ok, but even with the paintbrush selected, it has a hard time staying active. haha

its odd to me.

According to gimp useres.com, it is a bug and it is not fixed yet. For some, the eyedropper tool in the photo above works just fine, for others, it defaults back to black no matter what color you pick. I do have the correct layer selected, no masks, no effects. just a plain jane photo from camera.

thanks

Hi,
I find the eye dropper in the dialog called FG/BG Color works consistently. You can display this dialog under the menu Windows->Dockable Dialogs->Colors.

I have the same problem with GIMP 2.8.4. I use the color select tool. It works well.

The colour select tool is the only one I use... I find it very handy. You can leave your colour dialogue open and keep changing colours using the eye dropper inside. Works very well as I stated earlier in this thread.
Are you saying this doesn't work in Windows

Have you tried using a reset button in Preferences?
Edit | Preferences (@bottom right)
or
Preferences | Tool options (Reset... to Default Values)
You may need a Gimp restart.
