You can try this, Export Layers: http://registry.gimp.org/node/25394
This is what it looks like...

These are the images of each layer that were saved.

Have a look at this thread, where there is a script that saves layers to images. Also, there is a link there to saulgoode's script, which saves layers to png images, with support for layer groups,

Glad the script worked for you, they're pretty handy to have around. ;)

Indeed! I was working on an animation and I needed to save each frame, saving one at a time is boring, long, and confusing, this helps a lot! Thank you. :D

Are you sure it isn't "Export as SWF"? That exports PNG files to frames in a Flash movie. :)

I've never used Flash so I don't think that was it. :S

Hi.
I have this one written in python, save it in your Plugins folder
It contains 3 scripts that it creates under a Menu called Anitools.
One is 'Export all Layers as PNG'

Hmmm? That's odd. I just noticed the dates on this topic - August...
Someone must have made a new post yesterday, because it appeared for me in the 'unread' posts section.
Then by the time I answered they must have deleted their post.
I must admit I didn't look at the last post date.
You have had your solution for months now Monokofan.
Very strange. Either that or I am going crazy. :hehe
So to who ever bumped this thread, I hope the script I attached helped in some way.
To Monokofan, sorry for any confusion as to why I would post an answer so long after your initial request.
Hops back down the burrow....
