The only one I know of is Poster12 and it was written back in 1999. lol

Used it (cropped to sizes that are friendly to the utility) to created this one. Used the opensource Acid View 6 to convert the ANS files to PNG and merged back with the GIMP of course. What a pain. Cool thing about Acid View is I can change the palette (which I did). :)

Lylejk, I really like the result you have obtained in spite of the lot of effort I imagine you must have lavished. :bigthup

Regarding your main request, know that I have been searching for years for any software able to transform bitmaps into ANSI art, but without success till now. :(

On the contrary, as you may have noticed, the opposite transformation is provided by most programs handling the ANSI files, and also you can find several interesting applications which easily allow you to translate a raster image into ASCII art (JavE, Ascgen, etc.) and viceversa.

Anyway, in my opinion, the best program for creating ANSI art at the moment is PabloDraw, not only because it is one of the few that is still developed and regularly updated, but also and especially for the nice graphical interface and the powerful painting tools with which it is equipped, giving the possibility of drawing with mouse, unlike other programs of similar type which enable you to operate only through the much less convenient keyboard.
:paint

So, considering that this program proves to be continuosly upgraded and enhanced, hopefully, sooner or later, an useful feature such as the ability to convert images in ANSI art will be eventually implemented as well. :)

Surprised you don't use Textaizer pro Lyle. :)

@Lylejk

I do not know a program that does this automatically.
I did a little experiment with this plug-in :
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=9133

Resize, example 96*128 and export as .txt (option html).
Rename .txt > .html
Open with a Web browser > full screen (F11) > make one or more screenshots > resize > etc...

Here is a small example :

Nice result samj; just that ansi is a little different. It's what they used with the old BBS systems for sharing art back in the day but I still like the look. I do know that GMIC's Oldschool preset gives you, for the most part, the look that I'm going after except it doesn't allow for the intermingling of fonts and such. Oh well.

Textaizer's cool too Rod and I've indeed played with it, but it's still not ANSI. ASCIIgen is a cool program as well and I used it often back in the day and do so a few times every year for effects with I'm in an ASCII mood, but now, I'm in an ANSI mood. You can say, I'm getting a little ansy (I know; antsy. Just couldn't help myself). lololol

:)

@Lylejk

Can you show an example of what you would have as a result (an image) ?
Should only be limited to ASCII characters ?
1 or + fonts ?

Ansi not only uses text but also graphic symbols in the mix to create what I refer to as BBS art (bulletin board). You can see the file types as ANS or XBIN for instance.

Below's a wiki that will give you what I'm talking about. :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANSI_art

The artists commonly also implement figlet designs into their results which the blending of it all attracts me for whatever reason. :)

I found this by accident, I have no idea if it's useful.
Sixteen Colors Draw ANSI Editor
Try it! opens the online editor.

Those are the codes, as well as an extended character set, the escape codes also permitted 'flashing' characters.
This is a video screen capture in linux reduced to a gif but it shows the effect.

I remember dial-up ANSI bulletin boards from the 80's. Here in the UK horrendously expensive, every call was 'long-distance'

I still have a good collection of ancient software, alas nothing suitable, it is like hens teeth.

for anyone interested this is the linux code to generate the demo

#!/bin/sh

for attr in 0 1 4 5 7 ; do
    echo "----------------------------------------------------------------"
    printf "ESC[%s;Foreground;Background - \n" $attr
    for fore in 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37; do
        for back in 40 41 42 43 44 45 46 47; do
            printf '\033[%s;%s;%sm %02s;%02s  ' $attr $fore $back $fore $back
        done
    printf '\n'
    done
    printf '\033[0m'
done

Open the archive and edit the html file to find the link to the converter.

Cheated a bit, I generated some ANSI character set images, recoloured them with the VGA colours (no flashing/underlines) Lots of batch processing.
Then ran an image through metapixel

Probably andreamosaic will do the same.

Here is my attempt at representing Wilber in the form of ANSI art, with both the IBM and Amiga fonts:

Image

Image

First I used Ascgen to convert a simple raster image depicting Wilber into an ASCII art featuring block characters only, then I copied the obtained text to edit it with PabloDraw, so as to color the Wilber's face and add a circular frame and some decorations.

You know Lyle Kevin wrote me a script a while back for text art. You have to have two layers - an image and a text layer.
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2994

Still one of my favorites. :)

Yes Rod; had followed that thread a while back. Excellent stuff but I'm looking for the true bbs look where the stuff at that thread is more like a canvas (i.e., gradients within text as opposed to a solid full color and blank). :)

Never thought to use a photo-mosaic program to create these; would probably work fantastic given the nature of how Photomosaics work. Hmmmm. Thanks for the idea. :)
