I was doing a tutorial the other day, I got half way through it and realised I didn't have the GMIC. So I downloaded it, but it didn't work. It said I had zlib1.dll file missing. So I searched for the said file and downloaded it. I thought this was all good because the GMIC was showing in the filters list. But when I clicked into into it I got another error message...
" the procedure entry point gzdirect could not be located in the dynamic link library zlib1.dll "

Now I am back stuck once more... any ideas please??

May I also take this opportunity to wish all my new gimp chat friends a very merry Christmas x x

Jess you probably have too many of that zlib.dll file. GIMP will read one and none if there are more than one in it's PATH. Search for one in your bin folder. If it's there delete OR rename the other one in your plug-in folder.ie OLDzlib. KEEP the one in the BIN folder.
IF you still have the same zlib error search Windows/system folder for the same dll and rename it also.

Thanks Rod, that worked a treat. I'm not sure what you mean by the BIN folder tho? I just renamed it as you say and put it in the plug-ins with the other dll files. Loads of new stuff to play with x

Update: It was working and when I tried to apply something it crashed, I found the files in the BIN folder, and there is 3 more as well as the one I downloaded and stuck in the plug-ins... help!

If all the dll files are identical, I would delete them all but one

Rename one of these two zlib1.dll files to zlib1.dll.old. Restart Gimp.

If your still having a problem, it might mean the zlib1.dll file in C:\Program Files (x86) is all you need. To test that thought, rename the other zlib1.dll (highlighted above) to zlib.dll.old. Restart Gimp.

Really stuffed now guys... I tried all sorts. At best I could use the GMIC but when asking it to do an operation, it crashed.
Then I renamed the files, and the same happened, so I renamed some and kept trying different variations.
Now I cant get the whole gimp 2.8 to open at all.
I wish I never touched it.
I have deleted them all, (in recycle bin anyway) as molly sugg, but that doesn't work either.
>>>>>>>>>Busted Gimp!!! what can I do... I think I might have lost a file whilst moving it too, cos I cant find one!
Am I stuffed??

Look in your recycle bin and make sure you didn't delete one of the dll's that had a slightly different name. If so, put that one back, or put them back one by one and see what happens. If that doesn't work, I know one of the great techies here will be able to guide you to a solution... don't give up. I don't suppose you can do a screen shot of the dll's you deleted to post here, can you?

I wonder why the first one has a different size and says data compression library and the other two say general purpose data compression.
You might have to end up cleaning all Gimp files out of your computer, even the hidden ones and reinstall but when more people come on line, there may be other ways.

I believe zlib1.dll is part of the Gimp 2.8 install on Windows. This means you need only one copy of zlib1.dll to run Gimp properly. In your case you had two conflicting copies in your Gimp folders. Do another search for zlib1.dll and post the updated results.

Hello, and thanks for stopping by to help.
The GMIC does show in filters, but does not open without error.

I did try moving the apple common file today too, to see if it worked, tried putting it in other places I read on the net. but still didn't work, so I put it back.
Here are the current ones!

jess, It's very important when your troubleshooting a problem you don't move or delete anything unless you're sure it's the correct thing to do. That is why I suggest you rename using this format, xlib.dll.old. This disables the file but leaves it in place so you can easily find it if it's still needed.

In your case above you still have conflicting versions of zlib1.dll in 2 Gimp folder. Rename ONLY ONE zlib1.dll to zlib1.dll.old.
Rename the zlib.dll in .gimp-2.8\plug-ins. (Leave the other two zlib.dll files alone.)
Restart Gimp and see what happens.

Search for duplicate, libgcc_s_dw2-1.dll.

Here is a list of DLLs that G'MIC uses, search for duplicates in your Gimp folders. If you find any duplicates in your Gimp folders rename by adding .old (to ONLY ONE) of each set of duplicates.
jpeg62.dll
libfftw3-3.dll
libgcc_s_dw2-1.dll
libpng3.dll
libpthread-2.dll
libstdc++-6.dll
zlib1.dll

I gave you the complete list of DLLs for G'MIC because they are the likely suspects causing a duplicate conflict.

when I click ok to the 1st one I get the next one, I don't know if that helps in anyway?

thinking... would it be a good idea to uninstall GMIC and re install it, or would it make matters worse, as I have renamed some files?

No, you could reinstall G'MIC but I don't think that is the only issue. The good part is you will have the latest version of G'MIC. Is Gimp running OK for you or is it only G'MIC your having an issue with?
