Thank you everyone. The two "hobbit homes" are, I believe, some kind of storage. AnMal will know more about them.

Those are, basically, "earth cellars" (not sure what they're called in Sweden, but we have the same things in Finland, especially up north). They're the traditional method for storing food, used way back before refridgerators were invented.

I know what you mean. I recognised it from photos in books and on the internet. There isn't anywhere quite like it.

Really? I think it looks quite similar to Norway ;)

Probably will look exotic to someone from far away, but really the whole thing with the trees and subarctic lighting is about the same accross all of Fennoscandia - and a sizable part of western Russia as well, I understand, although I haven't been there myself so can't say for sure. (And it goes on overdrive when you go up north to Lapland...)

I must confess I haven't seen pictures of Norway and the closest I've seen to the Swedish landscape is parts of the Canadian landscape though I think Swedes and Canadians might disagree, being used to their own land.

mokonafan: you're a real flatterer, sis :hehe but we did have a lovely time!

dd: it's 'jordkällare' in swedish, so you're spot on :). i've learned it's often like that with swedish and finnish - you can translate swedish compound words literally into finnish and be understood. and i agree with you, i think the landscape is very similar all over fennoscandinavia - and probably parts of russia, but i haven't been there either.

erisian: thank you, dear. i'm glad you still think so after spending two weeks with me tickling you and calling you mean things... :hehe
i'd say dd is mostly right - but i can usually tell if it's sweden or norway if there's houses in the picture. i have mistaken finland for sweden, though, even with loads of houses in the pic.

Would you believe almost all of your photos are opening for me now on here. I saw them on PB. I asked re that account because I have one and figured that should make it easier for me to see.
We have those type of buses here in Adelaide but the buses were not made here or our trams. The first summer they went through they got such a shock they stopped working - they were made in Europe, and couldn't cope with Aussie weather.

Oh yeah, but it only works for some words. Like jordgubbe... how does "earth grandpa" (or more literally, "old man" but grandpa sounds better in english) translate to strawberry? I never understood that...

Very nice captures Erisian. Cool that fellow GIMPChatters from different countries are meeting up with each other in person. Maybe when I get better off financially, I might take some trips myself to meet up with the cool folk that I only know of online currently. :)
