How to get all options back in the toolbox & layers windows?

GIMP Version: 2.8.10
Operating System: Mac OS
OS Version: Mavericks
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

I have no clue what has happened, but now all of a sudden lots of options are now missing.

I've already gone to preferences and selected options (and unselected save on exit)

I can't even adjust the threshold anymore.

Why does this happen in the first place?

More importantly how can I get back ALL options again?

Have you tried Window/recently closed docks?

otherwhirl,
this image will show how you get your tabs back.
I circled the little wee black arrow on the left side, You can add options there,
When the drop down opens click add tab, then click tool options.
When you are working with a paint brush, the options below will show you your settings, If you are working on a gradient, same thing, the tool options will show what ever tool you are working with.
Now you do the same thing over at the right side, click that little tiny arrow an]d click add tab then choose what you want added, you will see on mine, I have the three main ones and a couple more, layers, channels, paths and a few more. that should work for you, if you have and questions please post back and I or someone will make it more clear.

Hey Molly YES, this is what I was referring to.
I see the arrow for the layers dialog, only thing is, for the toolbox I don't see any small arrow at all

I have to ponder that part, I will check to see how I did mine. I forget things too, much to often. Anyway, thats how you get them and how you get them back when you lose them.

EDIT: I dont know how to explain this but go back over to the right side and open the little arrow, add tool options, when it is added grab hold of the tool (Options) and drag it over to the left side half way down and let go. It should fasten itself there, then you can add more stuff with the little arrow.

Are you using the default Gimp theme?

No Odin, in his screen shot it shows a black or dark gray theme.

This happens when you detach and close dockable dialogs.
Easy to restore - Windows>Dockable Dialogs>Tool Options. It opens in the right panel.
Just drag and drop it under the tool box. The same with other missing dialogs(tabs) - channels, paths, brush editor, etc.

Yes it looks like you accidentally closed the tool options dialog box. Double clicking any tool should bring it up also.
