My clock moves up an hour every day and I have to change it every morning. Does anyone know what would cause this and a way to fix it?
Thanks in advance.

Wrong time zone (including DST, if any)?

molly: could it be your clock knows something you don't know? is your computer room suddenly subject to a rift in the time-space web  ?!
maybe you will find that time in your workroom actually moves faster than in the rest of the world and staying there too long instead of vacuuming the house will make you age in advance!!! oh, dreadful thought! be very careful, molly, very careful.

Computers are funny that way sometimes. This behavior can effect ability to access some secure sites because the security certificate will be out of date if your clock is off. However this usually means your clock is off by years. I have to set mine every day from Jan-2002 12 am forward to present time if i shut down.
Maybe Molly and i are going through time flux? :)
Actually to be serious i believe my processor is getting faulty. Or dirty again.

Does it beep when you turn it on or restart Molly?

Mine also keeps asking for a PCI memory controller driver update which i did download and attempted to install for my Vista 32 bit system but the computer refused to install it. Wrong configuration i guess or something of that nature.

Time to take mine to Aspen as it's probably full of dog hair. :rofl

Molly try just leaving it on and see if it changes again. Mine will change only if i shut down. Restart and log off doesn't effect it.

No experience on Fedora but I don´t see DST settings in that window. Maybe switch the Network time on?

You may have your clock set to sync with an internet server.

If you don't change it, will the clock be off by two hours the next day (and three hours the next...)? Or will it still only be off by one hour?

As to why...

Your computer's hardware clock does not keep track of time zones or whether Daylight Savings Time is active. These things are handled in software.

When you boot your system, Fedora will load the time that is stored in the hardware clock and then adjust it for your time zone and for DST (if necessary). When you shutdown your computer, it should write the time to the hardware (again adjusting for TZ and DST, but in the other direction).

There are basically two options with regard to timezone adjustment. The hardware clock is set to your local time, or it is set to UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). If you use more than one operating system on your computer then they should all be set to the same option, otherwise the OSes will be setting the hardware clock using different adjustments. Microsoft's OSes are not capable of supporting the UTC option*, and so to avoid problems when dual-booting Windows you should configure your GNU/Linux OS to use your local timezone.

If your computer is always connected to the Internet, you should enable NTP (Network Time Protocol) so that your computer's hardware clock is basically ignored and your OS gets its time from a time server (and keeps it in sync with periodic updates).

Could you please post the contents of the file /etc/adjtime?

* [edit] Correction. Windows can handle UTC as long as you go in and edit its Registry manually.

Saul, I turn off the pc every night, when I boot up in the morning it is one hour later than what it should be, same thing every day, just the one hour.
I don't know where to find NTP, whatever that is Where do I find DST?
I do have two hard drives and Windows 7 is on the other one, but I am not concerned about the time in there, I hardly use it.
Below is what my adjtime says.

adjtime
0.0 0 0.0
0
LOCAL

Rod No it doesn't beep when I boot up in the morning. Mine also never changes unless I shut down.

Nidhogg I don't know where to find DST or where to switch Network time on.

To start your NTP daemon, log in as root and create a file named /etc/ntp.conf. Paste the following lines into the file:
server 0.rhel.pool.ntp.org
server 1.rhel.pool.ntp.org
server 2.rhel.pool.ntp.org
restrict default kod nomodify notrap nopeer noquery
restrict -6 default kod nomodify notrap nopeer noquery
restrict 127.0.0.1
restrict -6 ::1

Next execute the command:
service ntpd restart

Then arrange for this all to be done automatically when you turn on your computer by running:
chkconfig ntpd on

The above instructions come from the Fedora 19 documentation.

Your time might not change instantaneously, as this might cause problems with file timestamps and process scheduling. What will happen is that Linux will speed up or slow down its internal clock until it matches the current time.

Molly you can use the following command to create the file:
cat >/etc/ntp.conf <<EOF
server 0.rhel.pool.ntp.org
server 1.rhel.pool.ntp.org
server 2.rhel.pool.ntp.org
restrict default kod nomodify notrap nopeer noquery
restrict -6 default kod nomodify notrap nopeer noquery
restrict 127.0.0.1
restrict -6 ::1
EOF

I pasted that code into root. and it comes up command not found.

[root@localhost ~]# cat >/etc/ntp.conf <<EOF
> server 0.rhel.pool.ntp.org
> server 1.rhel.pool.ntp.org
> server 2.rhel.pool.ntp.org
> restrict default kod nomodify notrap nopeer noquery
> restrict -6 default kod nomodify notrap nopeer noquery
> restrict 127.0.0.1
> restrict -6 ::1
> EOF
[root@localhost ~]#
[root@localhost ~]#

Where is there a "command not found"?

What you've shown looks correct. Is there a /etc/ntp.conf file now?

I got this when I put create in front of the command, then tried it again and it was the way you see it. (Where is there a "command not found"?)

now I found it under etc > ntp.conf, so do I open that with gedit and paste in at the bottom that second code you said?

Nope. The ntp.conf file should be all set.

You should ready to execute the command (at the command prompt):
service ntpd restart

Then set it up to be done automatically when you turn on your computer by executing the command:
chkconfig ntpd on

I've just read that your computer uses a battery to keep time http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/81. Is it possible that this needs replacing?
