Thank you Erisian, yes it looks very nice and clean. I have not ever done a thing complicated or fancy like I see on here. I just play with the tools and scripts and see what happens. I forgot an s - http://www.johnsonstelemetry.com/ They make radio tracking collars, it's pretty cool really.

GnuTux - My goal is to learn how to use many of the upper level stuff so I can start producing my artwork in Gimp.

In particular I have a fleet of commissions for goats featuring geometric shapes and tribal tattoos. I need to use this on a much higher level.

I am SO grateful for all the help, and so grateful to find it. Heck I'm grateful that Gimp exists because if I even contemplate purchasing photoshop or PSP I start to piddle.

So I think...I can do the metal wurx tutorials now. I have everything stored in the correct place and now to just open Gimp and see if it's really there...

Thanks AllenaMae - that's better and WOT (web of trust) gives it a good rating.

Very nice work in the first two links. In the third link all I got was a wot warning.

The original link was missing the 's' at the end of johnson, that is why WOT didn't like it.
I fixed it in the original post and Erisian's and Molly's quotes.

Draconian made some very good metal tutorials. There are also a couple of scripts that will do the whole thing for you.

Nice work! Those are great tutorials and I might eventually go through them again myself. I love metal in graphics! Not only that but you learn so much about some of the functions available in Gimp and how they can be used to good effect.

I've only been here for one day and I'm already in trouble! So I saw the awesome links to the picture to people website. I was wowed, and so was my friend whom I am doing a promotional flyer for. She loves this certain effect of the 3d text with a metal texture... Its called metallic035 but I can not post a link

So although I don't like it she LOVES it. but I can only get it at a resolution of 72/72 and I have to have 300/300 for printing. huge sigh.

I am a basic/intermediate user, I know how to use the filters and many of the tools. I do lots of tutorials and I am trying to learn. This person is a friend, and she is just in LOVE with this text. Does anyone know of a tutorial that would help me understand how to make this on my own? I can make the three d text effect, its the pattern that throws me. I think I need to make a bump map, but I am not really sure how those work, or how to make one...

I know it is asking a lot, but I hope someone will know where to point me. Thanks in advance.

I've posted some "tread plate patterns" here... viewtopic.php?f=12&t=9253&p=127055#p127055 Maybe these patterns can be of some help.

Thanks guys, yes Draconian is a pretty wonderful person if you ask me! Thank you Wallace, I will check those out...so much help here you guys are going to have me being a superstar in no time.

I am enjoying it, I have learned a lot of terminology. I am also learning how to use the bump maps. I have very strong basic skills using most of the tools, and some of the layer functions. There is SO MUCH there that it's really hard to really know what it all is.

I have decided it's time to become a power user, so I need to learn how to do it all, not for the text at this point but to understand the use of the tools. I have also decided to dedicate at least an hour a day to reading the manual.

That should help.

My husband thinks I need ot learn python so he can go to work and say "Yeah my wife writes scripts in python" lol geeky fellow I'm married too. A whole different idea of a trophy wife in the developer section HA HA HA.

SUCCESS!!!!

Thank you all very much for your help. Now I have to run to the cabinet shop and pick up a peice of my countertop and get it installed, then finish staining my cabinets and retape my kitchen, put some sheet rock up and do that for awhile.

I should be back later and again thank you all so very very much!
