Hi! I am trying to help a friend and create a menu for them.

I did the text work in inkscape, and then opened it into gimp to do image work.

When I see it in gimp, it is rendering text as if it is not vector - IE very blurry and chews up the font. Printing it makes it look like the ... dots are braille!

Does gimp rasterize stuff imported from inkscape, even if it is text? is there ANY way to prevent this, and have my text be as sharp in gimp as it is in inkscape (as long as I don't mess with it).

yup. imported paths option checked only.

i tried it again increasing the dpi, but that just made it tiny - and still blurry!

i'd do it completely in inkscape if doing ANYTHING in inkscape other than pure text didn't crawl slowly.

Could you post a screenshot of your gimp with th Image open and the paths dialogue showing as in mine below

or the XCF file as an attachment would be fine

Try this method, before you export from Inkscape, run Path | Object to path.
In Gimp, Import but don't merge paths.

EPS, not the svg, file format is the ideal solution in such cases :)

The only real vector elements of svg file that get imported to gimp are the paths.
Everything else is getting rasterized.
Some stuff created in Inkscape is a raster by its nature from the start - e.g. most of the filter effects
and some of the path modifications.
SVGs are not always 100% vectors, it can be a vector/raster mix depending on what you've done in Inkscapel.

Why not:
1. create the same text/path in gimp? Given the font you're using is the system font, create a text layer in gimp and Text_To_Path from the layers panel.
or
2. export your work as bitmap image(s) and open in gimp?

This worked! I am an inkscape noob, even after reading all the documentation. Their forums just aren't as awesome as ours.. hah!

i got an error message when I tried to open a converted .EPS

"Opening 'C:\Users\Jennifer\Pictures\season\object.eps' failed:

Could not interpret Postscript file 'C:\Users\Jennifer\Pictures\season\object.eps'"

so I do not know if this worked!

Do yall normally just do text stuff straight from GIMP? I rather hate the text window, I don't know why. it also seems blurrier in general when working in text.

It depends. For logo design I'd definitely stick to the vector graphics, if I wanted fancy text effects there is certainly more possibilities
and time saving in gimp.

Talking about eps, I wish there was a fully functional bridge file format between Inkscape and Gimp/Krita that would support both vector and raster specs and metadata, like eps is for the adobe family.
So far OSS programs have Openraster file format as an intermediate between Gimp, MyPaint, Krita but it can't carry over vectors graphics.
Then again, some Open Source programs already have a robust eps support (e.g. Scribus), partial support (Gimp) or full support in the near future (Krita).
No need to reinvent a wheel. :)

About eps error message and how to make gimp import EPS files, you might want to read this viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5643&hilit=eps and this http://www.gimpusers.com/forums/gimp-us ... ps-support

I am guessing you need Ghost Script installed to import as post script. :)
