When I place a font into the font folder of my Gimp 2.8 portable version, for example the font "WIDEAWAKE.TTF". It does not show up as an available font within Gimps font selection dialog.
In the screenshot below you can see where the font "WIDEAWAKE.TTF" should be, but it is not present.
What's going on here, any ideas?

If you go to menu option: Edit/Preferences/Folders/Fonts/, is GIMP looking in the folder you put those fonts in?

The preferences show the correct folder...

Well, dang. Does it pickup any other fonts you put in that folder?

Is the external device always being mounted to the F:\ drive or could that be changing?

I have only the one "Wideawake" font in that folder, and it doesn't show in Gimp. All the other fonts are from what's in my Windows font folder.
If I place a font into the Windows folder, only then will it show in my portable Gimp.

I haven't moved the program. It has always been in the F:\ drive. I just haven't needed to add any fonts until a few days ago when I noticed this issue.
I didn't think to check the preferences, but it shows the correct directory for the font folder.

It must be something else that's causing this, but I haven't got a clue what that might be. (scratching head)

Wallace would it be possible for you to post the font or a link to it

That is a head scratcher.

You'd think the portable version would look in the specified F:\ path for the font. Since you can add other folders in preferences list, you could create another folder on a different drive and place a couple of fonts in there, just to see if the portable version would pick them up.

That's interesting... I'll try that and see what happens. ;-)

When I went to change the path for the fonts. I noticed that the paths were not as I originally set up as the folder for the fonts to be found, which was just F:\gimp-2.8.4\.gimp-2.8\fonts.
Image
I did however change the path to D:\Fonts, but when I reopened Gimp, the paths for the font folder were as seen in the screenshot above. The change that I made to the path was replaced with what is in my screenshot. I tried to change the paths 3 times and still they were replaced with what is seen in the screenshot. That would be fine, except when I place fonts into any of these folders. They don't show up in Gimp.
Only fonts in my Windows font folder seem to be what is being shown in the font selecting dialog.

You've shown that like the portable version is overriding GIMP's settings, Wallace. Maybe someone who uses the portable version will have a solution. I'm out of ideas. :(

I figured it out, at least I think I did.
Inside portable Gimp is a folder named "etc", and in this folder is a fonts folder, and in this fonts folder I found a "Font.con" file.
I opened this file and there is a list of font directories, I added my own path as another font directory, and presto I can place fonts into the newly created directory and they show up in Gimp.
The preferences still show the same paths, but at least now I can put fonts into this new path directory and they show in Gimp.
This is what the "Font.con" file looks like now that I added the new path...
Image
And here's the font, wide awake that I placed into that new directory...

I see. The portable version must have its own folder of config files. Good job digging that out. :)

Thanks for posting. It's good to know these things. :hehe

With the portable Gimp there isn't as many folders as a full install. That made it a little easier to fish around looking for things, even though I didn't really know what I was looking for.
I just thought it must be something other then what was already mentioned.

So there's 3 font folders and the one that holds the Font config file is in the "etc" folder.

I found this same "Font.conf" file in Partha's Gimp 2.8.10, and needed to add the path to my user font folder. In order for any fonts placed into my font user folder to show up in Gimp.
Image
Seems like I'm the only one this is happening to. :gaah Could this be so?
