I would like to make a "Video Tutorial" entitled, "Understanding Layer in Gimp 2.8".

What I would like is your input as to what would be the most essential needs in such a tutorial to comprehensively cover the subject.
List anything you feel would be needed in the tutorial, and I'll put the updated tutorial together for us.

First thing that comes to mind is, adding Alpha Channel.
Also resizing, Desaturate (as opposed to Image → Mode → Grayscale), masks, modes...

Those are all great suggestions, and can be added to the tutorial, but the desaturation sounds like a color correction or change.
I wish to cover the basic layer usage and it's properties. Not to say that what you have suggested is not applicable.
Nonetheless, all and every suggestion will be considered as material for the tutorial.

you can explain why you need layers and some of the common usages of layers.

Nice one 2-ton!
I'll be sure to include what you've mentioned in the tutorial.

BTW... I'm taking notes, and will include anything that's been mentioned in this thread into the tutorial.

Wallace, nice idea, don't try to put in too much in one tutorial. You may want to look at "Grokking The Gimp", although a somewhat dated text, it has an excellent explanation of where the layer fits in the pixel to image progression. Chapter 2.2 Channels and their relationship to Layers, Fig 2.6.
Grokking the Gimp is available online. http://gimp-savvy.com/BOOK/

Wallace, videotutorial is easier to be done, but it is more difficult to be followed by people who do not speak English.
I think writing tutorial has greater range and can be followed by a larger number of gimpers.

That's a good point you're making.
This is why I want input about creating an updated "Gimp Layers" tutorial. Also if I create a written tutorial, I'm not limited by any time constraints and can include more information.
This may be the best way to go to be able to have any gimper follow along.
You've given me much food for thought, thank you Carlos for your input.

Mentioning desaturation, my thoughts were about layer specific actions as apposed to image.

That sounds like a really great tutorial, I need to learn about layer groups and attributes.
