I took to using a portable version so I never had to trust Windows for anything. Because I know Windows can't be trusted.

copy this folder↓ to desktop (just to be sure) then delete from 'program files' they are left over files from partha's install (you may need them later)

when you installed your new 2.8
1/ did you get a desktop icon with it?
2/ did you get a icon in your windows taskbar?
3/ if you have started your new gimp do you have a .gimp-2.8 folder in your C:\Users\username folder?

Yes, I got an icon in the task bar and I dragged it out to the desktop
Yes I have the c: .gimp user folder with all my scripts, plugins patterns etc.
So that folder withe two folders inside doesn't belong to the gimp I downloaded last night. I better go to windows now and move it and delete.
I am in iPad now so it will take a few minutes.

so now you have a desktop icon and a taskbar icon this is OK
does your .gimp-2.8folder have any plugins or scripts inside
i.e did it pick up your loaded resources from Partha's install

I removed those two folders that were inside and put them in a folder on desktop called Partha-leftovers, went back to programs and deleted the 2.8 folder. Now I have the gimp 2 only. I opened gimp with the icon on desktop and every thing seems to work fine, except my brush sets but that is for another thread. :teeth

Molly you don't have problems in Fedora do you, then hows your 'Addon Collection Manager' going
it must be a figment of my aging mind that there were problems there when I don't have any in Windows :lp :peng

I also have Gimp-2.8.10 in Linux but I don't expect I will have any problems with it cuz it is in Linux... :teeth
I don't call Windows funny, more like irritating. :pengy

Does Linux have a USB portable at all. Havent used Linux for a while but it is looking favourable again. Maybe Ubuntu 12 again.

I suppose that what you are saying is only relevant to processors 64-bits, which can install 32-bits packages and 64-bits packages.
I have a 32-bits PC and I only have 'Program Files' and my Gimp 32-bits is under 'Program Files'.
I don't even have a folder 'Program Files (x86)'

Same with my 32-bit machine.
My Gimp is installed @ C:\Program Files\Gimp-2.8; and there isn't a C:\Program Files\x86, folder on my computer either.

It is Windows (&windows installer API) behavior. On 32bit PC the Windows doesn't distinguish between x64 and x32 binaries (the OS is simply not aware of x64) and uses C:\Program Files for default installation path.

On 64bit PC the Windows by default installs x64 binaries to "C:\Program Files" and x32 to "C:\Progrm Files(x86)".

And this behavior is agnostic to Gimp. It is just the OS stuff.

That is true for pure 32 bit applications, for example in 64 bit Windows, Gimp 2.6.x installs to C:\Program Files (x86)\GIMP-2.0

With the the duel Gimp 2.8.x installer, when forcing a 32 bit installation using the /32 switch, the default installation location is still C:\Program Files\GIMP 2 Up to the user to change it, but it works there anyway.

How to tell the difference, apart from files sizes. Easy way, the 64 bit Gimp has a ..\GIMP 2\32 folder.
