Is it possible to retain the two layers so the top layer is modified but not blended with the bottom layer?

This would make manual fine tuning in GIMP much easier.

Iain : no, actually, I don't know how I can keep two layers. The algorithm reconstruct a merged gradient field and so reconstruct an entire image, where potentially all pixels of the background have been modified too.
